On its release in 2013, Immunity announced itself as a powerful, multi-faceted beast, packed with the most aggressively dancefloor-focussed music Hopkins had ever made. However, Immunity was never just about the techno behemoths - of which there were several. Hopkins wanted the album to help people to reach different states of mind. From graceful and mournful piano notes, stirring choral drones, he was always seeking new melodic routes to aid this and his desire to use physical, real-world sounds as the basis for many of the album’s rhythms allowed him to craft one of the most human electronic albums. — (via Label)

↓
Label: Domino
Format: 2 x Vinyl, LP, Album
Country: UK
Released: 2013
Genre: Electronic
Style: Electro, Tech House, Experimental, Downtempo

File under: Leftfield
⦿

Torpor fosters distemper. The smoothness of old is supplanted by surface noise on opening track, 'Silence'. Those familiar open guitar chords descend into something more menacing - the only constant, the spidery vocal of Beth Gibbons, still obsessively pacing around her pained and private world.

The fluidity of Portishead's music was always something of an illusion. Rather, it was painstakingly constructed with a maddening precision. That tensile quality is even more evident on Third. Edgy, wary, snarling and dissonant, the music mirrors the morbidity of Beth Gibbon's lyrics, accentuating the unsettling quality of a voice that is closer to the hysteric tones of Sixties free jazz innovator Patty Waters than any conventional pop vocal. Beset by an almost primal sense of insecurity, you get the feeling Gibbons is capable of mining misery from bliss. She even admits as much in the opening lines of 'Nylon Smile': 'I'd like to laugh at what you said but I just can't find a smile.'

The album's first single, 'Machine Gun' takes Portishead's minimalist aesthetic to extremes yet still manages to sound epic, pitting Gibbons's haunted vocal against a metallic beat. There are moments of lightness, but the prevailing mood is of a group who have succumbed to a riptide of dour emotion. Never has a pit of despair sounded so inviting. — (via The Guardian)

—

Third is a record that comes from a creativity unleashed as much by listening to the likes of psychedelic doom bass madmen OM as Public Enemy (Geoff Barrow explained as much in a recent interview). Whereas much of Portishead's '90s output had the feel and limitations of a film soundtrack 'All Mine', especially, would have slotted nicely into a Bond flick " Third is a complete, evocative whole. Final track 'Threads' is surely named for the unfathomably grim 1984 BBC mockumentary about Sheffield in the aftermath of a nuclear attack, and for that alone it's a brilliant way to end the album. Adding to its charm, there's a grim perfection to the deep, menacing, atonal booms that conclude it.

Of course, a record of unrelenting misery can't succeed as well as one where the mood varies; and Third succeeds precisely because it's an album that flows as well as ebbs. On 'Plastic', a peculiar and unsettling rattle adds tension, while the Silver Apples drive to 'We Carry On' demonstrates how Gibbon's voice (Ophelia singing distractedly to herself on the way to the river) has grown in textural dexterity over the past decade, even if her lyrics, which are often more personal and fixed in matters of the heart rather than in the abstract overarching mood, are perhaps the only weakness in the Portishead armoury. 'Deep Water', ostensibly a sweet torch song with querulous banjo, sounds terrifying in its juxtaposition with the grinding song that precedes it ('We Carry On') and the brilliantly tense one ('Machine Gun') that follows.

While Third is undoubtedly a dark, unforgiving album, you only have to look at the black-clad thundering legion that packed the Portishead-curated ATP last December to know that while such influences might have shaped this record, this is still a band who wave a scalpel at a very commercial jugular. Burial, say, will give you a more uncomfortable journey around the dark streets of a city at night, Sunn O))) a more stygian gloom, and so on. Still, respect is due: Third is an unexpectedly absorbing album from a band who've used ten years of exhaustion and disillusionment to hone what was initially great about them before into something entirely new. The pinging vocal samples that echo through the duo's remix of "Bug Powder Dust" by Bomb the Bass prove amply that Kruder & Dorfmeister have a better handle on 21st-century dub techniques than any other producers out there, and the impossibly deep beats on almost every track simply couldn't have been recorded by any other act. The Herbaliser rolls with a crew that is deep with fork-tongued lyricists and a badass horn section to add to the studio genius that is Jake Wherry and Ollie Teeba. Tracks like "Worldwide Connected", "24 Carat Blag" and "Mr Holmes" carry the dramatic, mysterious orchestration of a James Bond movie soundtrack. Layers of thick funk instrumentation and rumbling basslines provide the foundation while Lyricists like Iriscience (of Dilated Peoples), MF Doom and Blade fuel the verbal fires. Each MC adds his/her own character to the personality of the album. Iriscience brings precise lyrical dexterity, Wildflower lives up to her name with her diamond-in-the-rough, heavily accented cockney rhymes and Phi Life Cypher comes with West Indian street wisdom. The whole album sounds like the aural equivalent of a Guy Ritchie movie – irreverent, carefully orchestrated but carried off with a devil-may-care shrug of perfectly stylized musical shoulders, and above all, cool as hell. A dark tone pervades the album, in keeping with its cheeky grin of a title. He has laced silver piano reflections with harsh trap beats; he has brought together folk sounds of his native north with Western art stylings and contemporary electronics.

On Re:member, Arnalds takes a particularly delicate hand in assembling the sounds of live and computer-borne instruments, and the result is seamless. Each track glides on air and light, humanmade projections of an idealized natural world conveyed through a rich variance of human handiwork. Strings rush, keys shine, synths glow, percussion drives some tracks into headier speeds - everything is polished, and even on Arnalds' busiest pieces, serenity overcomes. For his second album, French producer Ludovic Navarre expanded the possibilities of his template for jazzy house by recruiting a sextet of musicians to solo over his earthy productions.

The opener "Rose Rouge" is an immediate highlight, as an understated Marlena Shaw vocal sample ("I want you to get together/put your hands together one time"), trance-state piano lines, and a ride-on-the-rhythm drum program frames solos by trumpeter Pascal Ohse and baritone Claudio de Qeiroz. For "Montego Bay Spleen," Navarre pairs an angular guitar solo by Ernest Ranglin with a deep-groove dub track, complete with phased effects and echoey percussion. "Land Of..." moves from a Hammond- and horn-led soul-jazz stomp into Caribbean territory, marked by more hints of dub and the expressive Latin percussion of Carneiro.

Occasionally, Navarre's programming (sampled or otherwise) grows a bit repetitious - even for dance fans, to say nothing of the jazzbo crowd attracted by the album's Blue Note tag. One night I stayed up late to see what kind of music was in her collection. There was an enormous amount of cool, late-'90s electronic music I had only heard about before. Acid jazz like Medeski, Martin & Wood, stuff like Meat Beat Manifesto. St. Germain's Tourist, one of the most successful house albums of all time, caught my eye. The bright colours and timetable on the front cover seemed urbane and impossibly cool. When I first put it on, I felt classy listening to it, like I was living some elegant fantasy life far beyond my years and means.

Fast forward to 2020 and putting on Tourist is to transport back what feels like an incredibly specific time. Nightclubs had been chased out of New York by Giuliani's decree, as part of an overall whitewashing of the city, but house music—ever more tasteful, melodic and hip—was everywhere you looked. Not just in New York, but in London, Toronto, Los Angeles and Paris, too. At every nice restaurant, at every cocktail lounge, all over TV shows like Sex & The City. Fusion-restaurant house was ubiquitous, and French producer Ludovic Navarre's second LP was king of them all.

It's easy to deride this kind of music as derivative. And a lot of it is. But not Tourist. The album is the culmination of a successful dance music career, a nearly instrumental album that sold more than four million copies. It laid the foundations for a style that still rules the places where you can sip a $16 martini and lounge on leather cushions, a sound that still signifies some notion of taste and class for a certain subset of the world.

Tourist is revered and lampooned for the same reason: its unironic sincerity, its knack for going there. This is a record that kicks off with "Rose Rouge," a house tune built around the rhythm section from Dave Brubeck's "Take Five." And why not? "Take Five," after all, is one of the best songs of all time, and the sound of the piano and brushed drums is a shortcut to another era. Complete it with the husky vocal from a 1970s Marlene Shaw performance and a trumpet solo from Pascal Ohsé, and you start to feel like you're at a bar you can't afford, or a party you're not swanky enough to attend.

The album takes you on a trip through the sixth arrondissement neighbourhood that gave Ludovic Navarre his artist name, and through Paris beyond it. St. Germain was famous for its lively post-war jazz scene: "Rose Rouge" was the name of a cabaret; "Pont Des Arts" is a bridge that connects the sixth and first arrondissements across the Seine; "Latin Note" is a nod to the city's famous Latin Quarter, another cultural hub, next to St. Germain, while "La Guotte D'or" refers to an African neighbourhood in the 18th arrondissement.

It's also, as much of Navarre's career has been, a blend of musical styles. Tourist is discussed in the context of acid jazz or lounge house, but aside from the choice of instruments, it's much more than that. The LP touches on blues, Chicago house and, particularly, dub, an important part of the album whose influence usually goes overlooked.

Dub runs through the pulse of the best tracks on the album. "Land Of..." is one of Navarre's most accomplished tracks, effortlessly switching tack from dub to jazz rhythms—check out the piano break in the middle, which sounds like Duke Ellington's "In A Sentimental Mood"—on top of a relaxed breakbeat. This is turn-of-the-millennium dance music genre alchemy. And the Scientist-sampling "Montego Bay Spleen" features the incredible playing from Jamaican guitarist Ernest Ranglin, who plucks and strums in languid circles around Navarre's calm dub beat. It's truly remarkable playing, not just an aesthetic gimmick.

The musicianship is another misunderstood part of Tourist. Navarre isn't simply putting down beats under jazz tracks or cutting up saxophone players from the '60s—most of the tracks feature solos laid down live by contemporary musicians, transforming Tourist from jazz-hop pastiche to a true jazz record, albeit one with a different kind of rhythm section (It even came out on the legendary jazz label Blue Note, which was dipping its toes into electronic music.) The live musicianship is what gives Tourist its panache and its most arresting details, like how the vibraphone shimmers across the stereo spectrum in glorious detail on "Latin Note."

Not that Navarre wasn't good at sampling: he takes a '90s-era collaboration between John Lee Hooker and Miles Davis and makes it the foundation for "Sure Thing," a laid-back jam that lets Hooker's guitar and voice do the talking. Hooker's angelic notes glide across the track, sounding almost inhumanly perfect at times, weaving and dipping through melodic figures in a way you'd never get on a quantized grid. Tracks like "Sure Thing" remind you that no matter the context, or how it was put together, you can't deny the soul of Tourist, which is more than the sum of its parts.

Soul is what sets Tourist apart from everything else that sounds like it. It's hard to divorce it from the clichés it helped inspire, but in this album you can hear the groundwork for musical adventures like Mala In Cuba, or the long-running Verve jazz remix series. Navarre took a glossy style often reduced to anonymity and infused it with personality.

Before he conquered the world with Tourist, touring so long that he ended up tired of the music (and not releasing anything else for almost 15 years after), Navarre was a credible club producer. He was first signed to Laurent Garnier's F Communications, and under aliases like Nuages and Deepside, he made earthy house, jacking techno and styles that would hint at the revolution to come with Tourist. (The Chicago tribute "Jack On The Groove," released as D.S., is an essential track you can hear on the From Detroit To St. Germain compilation.) So when he released Tourist he wasn't so much cashing in on a trend as fleshing out the jazzy sound he started, standing in opposition to the glitzy disco mania of French house at the time.

Ending up a mainstream success and bringing house music to the masses once again, Tourist was eyed suspiciously by hardcore enthusiasts on either side of the jazz-dance divide. (A notorious Village Voice review called it "NPR techno.") But it's a wonderful time capsule with sensibilities that still ring true today: great drum programming, heartfelt jazz playing and a stylistic range palatable to both electronic music haters and club dance floors alike. ("Pont Des Arts" is a lost organ house anthem.)

Navarre has since moved on to working with West African artists and musical styles, but Tourist casts a long shadow over everything else under the St. Germain name. Sure, it's not perfect—the dated "So Flute" is better forgotten—but Tourist deserves its place in the house music pantheon, creating a sound that, for a time, seemed to be pretty much everywhere. — (via Resident Advisor)

↓
Label: Parlophone ‎
Format: 2 × Vinyl, 12", Album, Reissue, Remastered, 180gram, Gatefold
Reissued: 2012 / Original: 2000
Genre: Electronic, Jazz
Style: Deep House, Future Jazz, Downtempo

File under: Electronic // Downtempo
⦿

South Asian dance and electronic music rarities handpicked, remastered and occasionally reworked. Layering the atmospheric textures of trip hop onto their innovative samples and irreverent humour, the pair created a hip-hop classic rife with personality and flair, and to critical acclaim. - The Analog Vault

—
The concept behind Handsome Boy Modeling School - if you separate it from its origins in a Chris Elliott sitcom - can be taken as a subtle parody of hip-hop's player affectations: two geeky producers masquerading as jet-set male models. It's why Crooks & Lovers is highly anticipated by such a small community of listeners-- and also why it has such a good chance of being appreciated by a larger one.

When an interviewer from The Fader said he'd tried to search for Mount Kimbie on Google Maps but couldn't find anything, Kai Campos-- the other half of the group-- explained, "It's a place inside all of us where buses arrive on time." Not a cloud-scraping peak where the sunsets burn pink and white for miles, not a metaphor for the grandeur of creation, just a small town with reliable public transportation-- a beautiful, small, and clever answer for a beautiful, small, and clever album. - Pitchfork

Label:

Hotflush Recordings – HFLP004X

Format:

2 x Vinyl, 12", 33 ⅓ RPM, 45 RPM, Album, Reissue

Vinyl, 12", 45 RPM, EP

Country:

UK

Released:

May 2021 | Original: 2010

Genre:

Electronic

Style:

Dubstep, Ambient, Downtempo, Experimental, IDM, Bass Music

Not at all easy or even impossible to define "Krautrock" or "Kraut". Even the "look at me" cuts like "The Number Song" didn't break the mood; the album was so perfect and the technique, so awesome that it's still definitive today, and Shadow has yet to top it. Having completed a rough version by early 2005, he gave this to a friend who disappeared for 3 weeks and came back with short story scripts in which each scene represented a story of a different time in life, expressing the emotions which underpin the journey from birth to death. The more evident departures of the band’s 2008 third album Third and the confluence of songs from both albums on the 1998 live collection Roseland NYC Live have made it that much easier to group Dummy and Portishead together. The arrangements are drier, harder, more abrasive and more spare; air and solid are the album’s leading elements. Gibbons’s vocal language, likewise, has shifted: Though she always retains her composure, her tones are combative and bitter, accusatory and defiant. Her subjects are less cloaked in poetic elusiveness; she sings more frankly of concerns and troubles.

The album makes total sense, but how does it sound? One could argue that Portishead can be more admirable in theory than in practice. Created in direct opposition to the twinned principles of quick profit and easy pleasure, it’s a masterpiece of painful rigor. With the exception of “Undenied,” the album’s exhilarations, though plentiful, are inseparable from its harrowing politics and embattled nature. Utley’s riff on “Cowboys” is fit to saw through steel; Barrow’s beat on “Elysium” counts its measures with an alarming or bomb-adjacent urgency; Gibbons’s voice, shorn of comforting accompaniments, is charged with a kind of grievous purity throughout, reaching heights of agony unheard on Dummy.

Though the fact is obscured by the 11-year gap between albums, it’s certain that Portishead paved the way for the even more deeply disturbed tone of Third (their best album) as much as it marks an extension of the sonics introduced in Dummy. — (via Vulture)

—

Where Portishead’s debut, 1994’s Dummy, is noirish and lush, even warm, and just as content to be lavished with attention as it is to be played as gauzy background music at a dinner party, the group’s eponymous follow-up insists on being the focus of attention. If possible, the terrain is headier, the edges are sharper, and Portishead is, at times, a more arduous listen than its predecessor.

Beth Gibbons still sings her future-blues like an old torchbearer in a smoky lounge, but this time she does so as if she were cast as Billie Holiday’s evil doppelganger in a David Lynch film. Her voice competes with the sinister electric guitar that traces her vocal melody in “Elysium”—and wins.

The single “All Mine,” which first appears to be a “happy” love song (it even employs the old half-step key-change trick of so many drippy pop ballads), descends into a possessive declaration: “From that cloud, number nine/Danger starts the sharp incline.”

Cinema is a fitting reference point for a group that got its start by shooting and scoring a short film (1994’s To Kill a Dead Man). Vintage spy movies are still an obvious influence, but there’s a more futuristic sound enveloping the dusty surface noise and jazzy drum fills of Portishead. “Half Day Closing” and “Humming” have a spacey, sci-fi quality, and, like on Dummy, cinematic orchestrations (both original and sampled) underscore Gibbons’s mournful laments. “Seven Months” starts with a rupture, the singer’s vitriol spilling out as if held prisoner for the duration of those titular months (“How can I forget you/Disregard how I feel?”), Adrian Utley’s guitar seemingly bellowing up from the cavernous belly of a dungeon while Geoff Barrow’s barking synths stand guard like watchdogs.

What’s surprising, in retrospect, is how political Portishead is—or seemingly political, since Portishead has never been as politically outspoken as, say, Moby or fellow Bristol music pioneers Massive Attack, and Gibbons’s lyrics are often enigmatic at best. The cynical opening track, “Cowboys,” plays uncannily like a prophetic indictment of the looming Bush administration (“Did you feed us tales of deceit/Conceal the tongues who need to speak/Subtle lies and a soiled coin/The truth is sold, the deal is done”), while “Half Day Closing” was “Inspired by: The United States of America,” an alien-like comment on the so-called American Dream. Harder to suss out is “Elysium,” which, with its references to heaven (or, in the mythological Greek underworld, the place where the righteous dwell) and Crusades-old method of tarring and feathering, could very well be a pro-choice anthem—or at least a condemnation of many pro-lifers’ hypocrisies.

What’s also notable about Portishead is not only how well written the album is, but how well performed and guitar-driven the songs are, which no doubt enamored them to rock critics at the time. Unlike many electronic and trip-hop acts, Portishead was just as spectacular live—a fact best demonstrated on PNYC, the live album that followed a year later—and it was with this very promise that they sadly ventured into obscurity for a full decade.

Amid a plodding hip-hop beat, turntable scratches, and a sample from the Inspector Clouseau soundtrack (one of only two samples on the album—the rest were “original” samples recorded by the group), Utley sneaks in with an incredible Rhodes solo that would go on to be an even bigger highlight on PNYC. On “Undenied,” narrative tension is shaped by solemn piano and a rhythmic bassline that seems to measure the passing seconds as Gibbons strains to reach notes knowingly written outside her vocal range.

Bass also plays a fundamental function in “Humming”: Beginning as a plucky symphonic flourish before being replaced by a more synthetic instrument by song’s end, the bassline’s upward movement—like a helium balloon rising higher and higher into the sky—mirrors the singer’s sense of being swept away. These are the very things that set Portishead apart from their myriad disciples; there’s meat on Portishead’s hard, rigid bones. While other so-called trip-hop acts moved in a more accessible, trip-pop direction in the late 1990s, Portishead became stiffer, sinking more deeply into manic melodrama and the dingy recesses of the macabre. In a sense, a third studio album is essential to validate Portishead’s glorious Middle Child Syndrome. — (via Slant)

↓
Label: Go! Both Emancipator and Uyama Hiroto are given the limelight and allowed space to craft entire songs on their own. One track is even a remix of a Daisuke Kojima track, with Jun simply shaping the song to fit his bill. This could be considered a risky move, because whilst Nujabes has always been an effort heavy on collaboration, cutting himself out of entire songs is a bit excessive, right? Yet here, it pays off tenfold, adding spice to the album without affecting the core of what makes his music so appealing. Addictive horns, gorgeous string sections, jazz odysseys; they’re all still here, and all entrance just as easily.

Another key shift between Modal Soul and this album is a greater emphasis on instrumentals. Jun excels at creating the perfect skeleton for rappers to weave their tales over, but left to his own devices, it can be hard to flesh out a full album instrumentally. Jun understands this, and times each alternative production and guest rapper impeccably. Uyama Hiroto’s contributions are driven largely by a varied drum section and rely far less on the simple boom bap skeleton Jun often incorporates, and spacing these pieces out ensures the album never becomes too predictable or repetitive. The relaxed female vocals and choir chants that flow through ‘Imaginary Folklore’ refresh the listener. The piano melody acting as the focal point of ‘Another Reflection’, the crackles throughout closer ‘After Hanabi(Listen To My Beat)’ and the overbearing wall of sound forged in DSK remix ‘Winter Lane’ shake things around, keeping the listener on their toes but without discomforting them, never losing the magic atmosphere that pervades the albums 62 minute runtime. — (via Sputnik Music)

↓
Label: Hyde Out Productions
Format: 2x Vinyl, LP, Compilation, Reissue, Gatefold
Country: Japan
Released: Feb 26, 2023 / Original Release: Nov 11, 2007
Genre: Electronic, Hip Hop
Style: Jazzy Hip-Hop, Instrumental, Hip Hop

File under: Hip-hop 2000 & beyond
⦿

DJ and producer David Holmes is welcomed to the Late Night Tales fraternity with an evocative collection of personal songs and music, peppered with exclusive new material and rare gems.

By now, I think we all know David Holmes, right? While Dissent: Chapter 1 - 10 wouldn't go down so well at Blue Note, tracks like "Chapter 8" have a discernible jazz swing.

This has plenty to do with Laurel Halo, who spends at least half the record exploring jazz voicings for piano, often acting as a melodic North Star that was totally absent in the rippling experimental dub sound of records like Fetch. But this move towards melody and traditionalism itself doesn't make for the most exciting tracks—this is an experimental record culled from fully improvised sessions, so it follows that some zones feel more inspired than others. To these ears, some of the most inspired of Dissent's "Chapters" are more densely referential than previous MVOT music. The lurching "Chapter 1" mixes the air raid synths of the original (and far superior) version of Alice Coltrane's Turiya Sings with the mysterious Rhodes exploration of records like Miles Davis's Get Up With It. On "Chapter 4," Köbberling goes for a samba-inspired shuffle while Moritz and Laurel kick up a heavy, ominous vibe. Meanwhile, "Chapter 6" integrates Halo's jazzy chords and Köbberling's deft snare rolls into a style that makes loose gestures towards Detroit house. But it's within the final few tracks when von Oswald, Köbberling and Halo seem to gel as a unit, flowing into an ecstatic groupthink. "Chapter 9" revolves around a trio of optimistic chords, with Köbberling and von Oswald in fine form—a dub bassline underpins von Oswald's bizarre synth leads and Halo's tasteful piano soloing. The following track, "Chapter 10," explores similar dub jazz improv territory with greater emphasis on percussive delays and hanging, hypnotic chords. There are more readily identifiable moods, melodies and emotions on Dissent: Chapter 1 - 10 than previous MVOT records, in slight opposition to von Oswald's desire for mysterious and obscure sounds. However, even if this conversation between master musicians is less cloaked than previous versions of the trio, the approach remains the same—to use electroacoustic improv as a tool for hurtling into previously unexplored musical territory. — (via Resident Advisor)

↓
Label: Modern Recordings
Format: 2x Vinyl, LP, Album
Released: Aug 6, 2021
Genre: Electronic, Jazz
Style: Ambient, Abstract, Broken Beat, Downtempo

File under: Ambient / Experimental / IDM
⦿

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0584/5434/3838/files/ab67616d0000b2737cd686ddf51a4c556e0676b8.jpg?v=1717076919
haruomi-hosono-mixmaster-morris-jonah-sharp-quiet-logic-2024-reissue
Haruomi Hosono, Mixmaster Morris, Jonah Sharp – Quiet Logic (2024 Reissue)

The 1998 collaborative album brought together a trio of legends from the worlds of ambient and chillout. The multi-instrumentalist and producer had grown restless with the level of celebrity foisted upon him as one third of synth-pop supergroup Yellow Magic Orchestra and was desperate to take his career in another direction after the band decided to go their separate ways. Morris made a name for himself as a prolific DJ, becoming a pioneer of ambient chillout, which gave ravers respite from the fast-paced environment of the main floor. Sharp, recording as Spacetime Continuum, occupied a similar zone—originally influenced by Chicago house and Detroit techno, his sound transformed as he retreated to the chill-out rooms and turned down the tempo. Laid back yet firing, it was a smoky homage to all things out on the dark side, a multi-textured transformation of rastafarianism, martial arts and fourth world beats. On a spring evening in 1995, over a drink at Washington, DC's Eighteenth Street Lounge, Rob Garza and Eric Hilton decided to combine their production efforts and form Thievery Corporation. After discussing their mutual admiration for Brazilian composers Antonio Carlos Jobim and Joao Gilberto, and their overall disdain for the majority of modern music, the duo embarked on a musical journey.

While neither considers himself a musician, both members have musical backgrounds. Hilton was playing in a neighbourhood garage rock band at the age of 11. Later, in his teens. Hilton became in awe of early punk rock groups like The Clash, The Jam, and The Sex Pistols. But it was the discovery of the local DC hardcore sound that he thinks changed him forever and after forming his own hardcore band in high school, Eric's tastes broadened to include the Two Tone and neo-mod sounds that were emerging in the UK. In the late '80s, Eric became a house music DJ at the Fifth Column, DC's premier dance club at the time. Leaving his gig there, Hilton began to throw warehouse parties and eventually started a weekly club night, Exodus. Rob Garza was born outside Chicago and soon moved to Walkersville Maryland, a small town 40 miles from Washington, DC. He grew up listening to his parents record collection: Henry Mancini, Sam Cooke, Johnny Cash, The Drifters and The Beatles. At the age of 16, Rob moved to urban Connecticut and started making beats in his school's electronic music class. There he learned electronic sequencing, sampling and drum machine programming. After returning to Maryland for high school, Rob enrolled at a school for visual and performing arts. While working for a firm specialising in aviation security and counter terrorism, Rob discovered jazz and bossa nova. And so Thievery Corporation was born.

There can be very few bands so perfectly named: the duo's magpie nature offers a perfect representation of the post-acid house sampling culture. Slipping through reggae dub plates, skimming around the edges of lounge muzak, taking in breaks, beats and bossanova along the way, Thievery Corporation’s bounty is an endless treasure chest of ideas old, new and borrowed. Thievery Corporation's first single was ‘2001: A Spliff Odyssey’, issued on their own Eighteenth Street Lounge (ESL) imprint in January 1996. While studying guitar and saxophone in his hometown of Milan, Musci developed a deep fascination for non-western music and set out to travel across India, Asia and Africa, which he would do extensively between 1974-1985. During his many journeys Roberto would become deeply embedded in each unique world of rhythms, scales and approaches to making and performing music. When the first part covers the early, yeasty years from 1997 to 2000, the second episode pays tribute to the years from 2002 to 2005 and the third sequel takes the last few years, the lapse of time from 2006 to 2016 to task. This decade as well was – as you can hear strongly by listening to this long player – a very prosperous, inspiring productive period for Jazzanova.

How fast time flies is displayed by these nine selected tracks from the last ten years. All of them still sound as if they have been released just yesterday. Starting with the remix of “Listen To The Drums” by Outlines, which evolved into a worldwide club hit over the years, also thanks to the edit by Dixon. Most remarkably this work is already ten years old! The remixes of Furry Phreaks' "All Over The World“ and Heritage Orchestra's "Skybreaks“ also doesn't really sound like two tunes from 2007. Au contraire, this is the trademark sound of Jazzanova carving itself genre-spanning into eternity. Or who would dare to not declare the 2009 remix for Atjazz' "Parallels“ as an modern day dance floor classic? And with the reworks of tracks by Hugh Masekela ("Stimela“) and Joe Bataan ("Ordinary Guy“) we have two actual funk/soul evergreens featured on this compilation's wonderful third edition. A must is obviously the inclusion of the remix for “Believer” by Paul Randolph from 2007. It was this remix that was somehow the start of longterm relationship that culminated in Paul becoming the steady guest singer of Jazzanova and with whom they’re touring worldwide since 2009. To top The Remixes 2006-2016 off there's the rework of the forgotten, but recently re-issued by Notes On A Journey Spinning Motion's “Naze”.

And as a bonus track you are treated with a not yet released remix of “Dimentica Domani“ by young, Italian singer-songwriter Malika Ayane. These are nine state-of-the-art remixes carrying Jazzanova's name deep into the next decade. — (via Label)

↓
Label: Sonar Kollektiv
Format: 2 x Vinyl, 12", Compilation, Red
Country: Germany
Released: 2017
Genre: Electronic
Style: Broken Beat, Future Jazz

File under: Downtempo
⦿

A group turned solo outlet for founding member George Evelyn, Nightmares on Wax were one of the brightest spots on the post-rave British techno map before they developed into one of the land's premier and longest-running sources of downtempo electronica rooted in dub reggae and hip-hop.
