Since their inception at Humber College’s Music Performance program in 2011, the three have challenged the rule book on improvised instrumental music and taken jazz tradition into the future. With early champions including acclaimed BBC broadcaster Gilles Peterson and Tyler The Creator who helped fuel their discovery with a series of live jams that instantly went viral and dubbed them the “Odd Trio”, the band released their first EP BBNG in June 2011 to wide praise. The marriage of jazz virtuosity and hip hop source material offered a fresh take on the traditional “standard” applied to hip hop classics by taking on choice cuts from the golden era rap cannon and writing inspired arrangements for them instead of one-dimensional covers.

The band hit a landmark by introducing original material into their composi- tions with BBNG2 in 2012. New songs like “Rotten Decay”, “Vices” or “UWM” carried on the proud heritage of musical juxtaposition by bringing together jazz, hip hop, punk, and dance music into vigorous balance. Since then, they’ve won praise from the four corners of the globe and collaborated with Frank Ocean, Earl Sweatshirt, MF Doom, Pharaoh Monch and RZA among many. Their no- torious live performances have brought fans across the whole musical spectrum together, taking the band around the world from Coachella to Glastonbury.

Now, the inseparable friends are prepping to release their biggest project to date III on prodigious young label Innovative Leisure, a highly-anticipated project ushering in the group’s newest explorations which are proving to be limitless. – Innovative Leisure

↓
Label: Innovative Leisure Records
Format: 2 x Vinyl, LP, Album
Released: 2014
Genre: Jazz
Style: Contemporary Jazz

File under: Modern / Future Jazz
⦿

“Saxophonist and composer Marcus Strickland is a seasoned veteran who helped to pioneer this new rhythm and production aesthetic in jazz with 2006's double-length Twi-Life and 2016's brilliant, Meshell Ndegeocello-produced Nihil Novi, his debut for Blue Note. Most of the material is from the earlier album, an overdubbed solo set which Dawid assembled herself and most of which she wrote. The only pieces not wholly composed by Dawid are "Destination," whose topline was written by Yusef Lateef, and "What Shall I Tell My Children Who Are Black," which has lyrics by the late Chicago poet and African American activist Margaret Burroughs.

Of the Berlin show, Dawid says, "It was very deep, and really helped me to process all the rage, and uncomfortable things I was feeling. It was in that sense that we at International Anthem came to work with Parker during the production of Makaya McCraven’s In The Moment, an album which ultimately showcased said essentialness (of Parker’s “side man” sound) on 9 of its 19 tracks.

Over the course of the In The Moment sessions in 2013 and 2014, Parker was slowly transitioning his personal belongings from Chicago to a new home in Los Angeles. It was when finally settled that he found opportunity to re-open some home recordings and beat projects that had been dormant on his hard drive for years (early versions of some could have been heard in the late ‘00s on his Myspace page). Parker had long been in silent study of vinyl sampling and beat conduction, but perhaps it’s no coincidence that new residence in a city aflame with experimental R&B, jazz and electronic fusers (i.e. L.A., e.g. Brainfeeder, Leaving Records, Low End Theory) spurred him to dig back in to the practice and produce with more purpose.

By early 2015 Parker had refined several compositional ideas around his samples, and enlisted local friend Paul Bryan (Aimee Mann, Meshell Ndegeocello) to engineer and play bass guitar in sessions with Chicago ex-pat saxophonist, Thelonious Monk Institute protégé Josh Johnson (Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, Esperanza Spaulding)and drummer Jamire Williams (Robert Glasper, Carlos Niño. The recordings were conducted to capture composed passages as well as free playing that used Parker’s beats and sample suites as improvisational criterion. After completing 7 songs with the band, the last of which with vocals from his daughter Ruby Parker recorded in Chicago by John McEntire, Parker named the project The New Breed (after a clothing store his late father Ernie owned and operated in the ‘70s)and finished the album by stitching the band tracks together with intermittent pieces of beat memories from his archive. - Bandcamp

Label: International Anthem Recording Company ‎– IARC 0009

Format: Vinyl, LP, Album

Country: US

Released: 24 Jun 2016

Genre: Jazz

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0584/5434/3838/products/05f82bf8f7f1517b1ab39d046786893e233e0c72.jpg?v=1646294266
markdeclive-loweandrealombardinitommasocappellatodreamweavers
Mark De Clive-Lowe, Andrea Lombardini & Tommaso Cappellato ‎– Dreamweavers

Musical maverick Mark de Clive-Lowe returns to his roots with a new electro-acoustic record ‘Dreamweavers’, displaying his talent as a pianist and composer in partnership with creative collaborators bass player Andrea Lombardini and drummer Tommaso Cappellato. From this open map, the duo layered samples and electronic elements from Juno 106 and Moog Grandmother synths over their acoustic improvisations, overdubbed contributions from poets, vocalist and instrumentalist friends, and added field recordings of themselves in conversation. To sculpt the mass of sounds they commissioned ada adhiyatma (aka Madam Data, a Philadelphia-based composer/electronicist who they’d met through a joint collaboration with Moor Mother) for a final mix. Of the album’s de facto anthem “Pueblo,” Navarro says “it’s a celebration of life, the coming together of the people, el pueblo, a celebration of who we are, where we come from, it’s our pueblo, our people, a feeling of openness, hope, and a future of unity from el pueblo, the people.” Identifying as active listeners and audience members as well, Navarro and Holmes step back on “M.O.N.K (Most Only Never Knew)” to shine a light on the solo improvisation of pianist/composer Nick Sanders. On the 8-minute duet “NAVARROHOLMES,” the two players reach a summit as they face off in spirited alliance, conjuring visions of legendary free jazz telepathics – Braxton and Roach, Coltrane and Ali, Cherry and Blackwell.

-

Navarro and Holmes never idle on "Heritage of the Invisible II," choosing instead to ponder their origins in a devout charge of ecstatic cooperation. Wunder takes the listener somewhere around the easternmost part of the Mediterranean Sea, around the Levantine Sea, where he paints a colourful portrait and illustrates the regions flora through sound. The fruitage is a vivid bouquet where Wunder fuses colours and pigments by using traditional and modern instruments merged with arrangements and melodies that stretches from popular to folk music by portraying tulips, red roses, hibiscus, hyacinths, chamomile, magnolia, daisies etcetera. With both fine and thick brushes are these flowers being pictured in a both modern and classic idiom. The outcome is prismatic. It stands between Anatolian rock and European jazz-funk with ponderous drum patterns, groovy organs, far-out synthesizers, enchanting Saz and impetuous bass lines. Moor Mother) and bassist Luke Stewart, who came together to perform at a Musicians Against Police Brutality event organized after the slaying of Akai Gurley by the NYPD. Months later the group added trumpeter Aquiles Navarro and drummer Tcheser Holmes (a duo who also performed at the MAPB event) for a single day of recording at Seizure’s Palace in Brooklyn, and the full quintet’s first time playing together was captured for this debut. In four relentless bouts of inspired fire music the instrumentalists explore and elaborate compositional ideas drawn from their deep individual studies of free jazz improvisation, but the tone of each piece is driven decisively by Ayewa’s searing poetic narrations of Black trauma, survival and power. The message is the undeniable essence of the music. Though free jazz with voice is an uncommon approach in the modern day landscape of the genre, the spirit and subject the band channels and explores represent a return to a central tenant of the sound as it was founded – to be a vehicle for Black liberation. As creative and adventurous as any recording of contemporary avant-garde jazz but offering listeners no abstractions to hide behind, this is music that both honors and defies tradition, speaking to the present while insisting on the future.

Irreversible Entanglements is the first collaborative split release by International Anthem & Don Giovanni Records, a partnership aimed to amplify this potent music and pertinent message to the widest possible audience. - Bandcamp

Label: International Anthem Recording Company ‎– IARC0014, Don Giovanni Records ‎– DG-157

Format: Vinyl, LP, Album

Country: US

Released: 26 Sep 2017

Genre: Jazz

Style: Free Jazz, Poetry

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0584/5434/3838/products/b960fb8e3db98040d3a9702b9150186225926bd9.jpg?v=1646296584
str4taaspects
STR4TA ‎– Aspects

Brownswood bring you an exclusive pressing of the debut LP from STR4TA entitled “Aspects” on VINYL ONLY (for now).

A project that grew out of a jam session, STR4TA captures the raw energy of the Brit-Funk scene of the early 80s over eight tracks.

Following the limited white-label 12” release of their debut single (also entitled Aspects) that featured a deadly Demus Dub on the b-side, STR4TA now present another exclusive vinyl that reflects the DIY spirit of that scene.

Each vinyl comes with 2 sheets of stickers designed by Robert Gallagher giving you the chance to design your own sleeve. - Brownswood Recordings

Tracklist:

A1. Taking cues from soul, jazz and club culture, they’ve stamped an uninhibited style on a sun-bleached spool of influences. A snapshot of a movement that’s ready to boil over, the nine acts on ‘Sunny Side Up’ have grown out of a city free from the weight of overbearing musical traditions, where outside influences are freely re-interpreted and mashed together. A celebratory record, it’s energised by a collaborative spirit as much as by the variety of styles which it collides together.

The record documents a scene poised at saturation point, after steadily expanding since the breakout success Hiatus Kaiyote in 2012, with whom many of the record’s groups share members, friendships or studios. Nurtured by institutions like record shop Northside Records, this is an album which shows splashes of deep house, broken beat, cha-cha, samba, p-funk and soul. Unlike other cities with storied histories in jazz culture, the sound of Melbourne is free of any jazz customs to follow behind, leaving musicians free to incorporate hip hop, house or R&B. Bartz has long been in dialogue with pop music forms—all the way back to his classic NTU Troop band of the ‘70s—so the octogenarian keeps step no matter what sound comes his way, grappling and assimilating without breaking a sweat. His horn slots readily into the simmering groove and scratching wah-wah guitar of “Blue Jungles,” while his melodic sing-song solo is every bit as dreamy as the shimmering keys and backing coos on “Day By Day.” No disrespect to all the mighty drummers behind Bartz back in the day, but it’s a real treat to hear Bartz weave in and around Muhammad’s head-knocking drums. The breaks are crunchy and sweet on standouts like “Spiritual Ideation” and “Distant Mode,” with Bartz revisiting the sort of warm, buttery tone that turned him into a jazz-funk star. Streetwise rhythm and smooth melody in a beautiful exchange. – Bandcamp

Label: Jazz Is Dead – JID006LP

Series: Jazz Is Dead – 6

Format: Vinyl, LP

Country: US

Released: 1 Apr 2021

Genre: Jazz, Funk / Soul

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0584/5434/3838/products/99ba39292733c42f99cc7b5318ad7247a1fe86e5.jpg?v=1646297618
thegritnessacoustronicsmahakali-themusicofdoncherry
The Gritness Acoustronics – Mahakali - The Music Of Don Cherry

Electro Funk trailblazer Gary Gritness re-imagines Don Cherry’s late 70s and early 80s experiments through a synthed-out prism, reworking the standard jazz trio format into synth, saxophone and analogue drum machine for a one-take live session featuring a guest appearance from Malian Kora maestro Ballake Sissoko. - Bandcamp

Label: Komos – KOS 004 LTD

Format: Vinyl, LP, Album

Country: France

Released: 2019

Genre: Jazz

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0584/5434/3838/products/31a0f27179f951cd96e40656bdb2360de5773c1a.jpg?v=1646298054
softpowerbrinkofextinction
Soft Power – Brink Of Extinction

Modern Jazz / Jazz Rock / Psychedelia group out of Finland, Helsinki. 2nd re-press of this amazing LP - Highly recommend checking it out!

There is a Window Of Opportunity called life. A limited period of time, into which we must fit the quotidian activities of everyday life, our dreams, relationships, personal pleasures and self-discovery. Sometimes we contemplate our death, our impact on the world and the traces we’ve left. Biodiversity is one of the most serious issues of our time. We are currently experiencing a period of mass extinction mainly caused by human activity, e.g. overfishing, hunting and the spread of cities and agriculture.

-

It is said that we can’t understand our own death, but is it any easier for us humans to comprehend the scale of death associated with mass extinction, the disappearance of species? Every species is an important part of the ecosystem. Furthermore, with every extinct species, a mode of being is lost. With biodiversity being in such a precarious state, it might be easy to submit to feelings of resignation. Yet, for those who seek beauty, there is still beauty to be found. And there will be, I hope. Likewise, for those who wish to express their love and compassion for the world and for the life inhabiting it, the possibility is still there. As Ayewa’s inquisitive gaze turns inward on the sinewy Latin-tinged groove of “No Mas,” she remains resolved “to love ourselves fully.” Built from a walking bassline and clanging hand percussion, “Bread Out of Stone” never rises above a simmer to convey the message of resilience in the face of oppression. The shrieking, flailing properties of free jazz are often interpreted as unbridled anger, rising as it did during the heights of the Civil Rights era and inner-city unrest. And while Irreversible Entanglements draws on that tradition, they aren’t merely mimicking an older version of jazz. They are making it resonate now, emphasizing it as a music of ritual, much like Ayewa’s other loves, like gospel and blues. It conveys all of the urgency of her raw, earlier work now across a greater vista, untethered by time yet wholly in the present. - Pitchfork

-clip: initial;">Label: International Anthem Recording Company ‎– IARC0031, Don Giovanni Records ‎– DG-202

-clip: initial;">Format: Vinyl, LP

-clip: initial;">Country: US

-clip: initial;">Released: 20 Mar 2020

-clip: initial;">Genre: Jazz

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0584/5434/3838/products/cfc4fa37eebb5ad7cff1b4704391425e2f0a5015.jpg?v=1646299616
nick-walters-singularity
Nick Walters – Singularity

Nick Walters returns to his D.O.T. From Menares' firm assertions that set the piece into motion, "Falling" is a conference of integrity over adversity and serves as a most fitting prelude to all that follows.

Aldana is an emotionally arresting player who balances vulnerability and victory; her horn at once looses whispery confessions and purposeful statements of strength and resolve. An open conversation where all have equal pull and sway, "The Bluest Eye" (named after a novel by Toni Morrison) exhibits an understated undertow which evolves more by feel than by any given chart, holding the quintet steady for them each to tell their story (as well as that of Morrison's antagonist) of witnessing, with open heart and mind, the interior light which overcome all darkness. "Emilia" is a dream story told by Aldana through diaphanous clouds of Lund's echoey guitar clusters and Fortner's clouds of Rhodes; a lullaby for a dream child.

Much like her bold, declarative "Frida" from Artemis (Blue Note, 2020), "Intuition" finds Aldana centerstage, finding all she needs within herself and lighting the fuse on a series of wide ranging, confident lyrical statements. Thoughtful of her conversant circle of peers, the forum is open, making jaunty, full-bodied tracks like "The Fool" and "Los Ojos de Chile" a friendly, familial parlay. Closing on the gravity-defying title composition, Fortner's emphatic touch on the Rhodes provides Aldana's sincere, reflective tone a nest from which to fly into new regions she and we will experience as her vision comes into fuller focus. Though not her first album, 12 Stars is the Chilean-born improviser's debut for the storied Blue Note label. The 2013 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Saxophone Competition winner, Aldana has spent much of the last five years earning accolades, including picking up her first Grammy nomination for her 2019 album Visions. Named after the 12 stars pictured on the crown of the tarot card figure The Empress, 12 Stars builds upon that success, showcasing Aldana's growing maturity as both a soloist and bandleader.

Helping Aldana achieve this balance is Norwegian guitarist Lage Lund, who produced the album and collaborated with her on the songs and arrangements. Joining them is pianist Sullivan Fortner (who has distinguished himself as a member of vocalist Cecile McLorin Salvant's Grammy-winning albums), drummer Kush Abadey, and longtime Aldana bandmate bassist Pablo Menares. Aldana and Lund are a magical team, often playing melodies in tandem.

On the opening "Falling," Lund bathes Aldana in sparkling, otherworldly drones, her warm shooting-star sax refracting off the hull of his alien spaceship guitar. Equally hypnotic is "The Bluest Eye," a rippling, modal-sounding piece inspired by the Toni Morrison novel.

There's a warm, cocoon-like quality to Aldana's compositions as she envelops herself and her audience in shimmering tonal cascades. She's also mutable, with a tone that's water pure one minute before rising to a high-pitched squelch the next, à la Wayne Shorter, as on the dreamy, tango-inflected "Intuition." Even on the vibrantly propulsive "Los Ojos de Chile," an anthem inspired by the 2019 political turmoil and protests in Chile, Aldana plays with an easy warmth that belies just how athletic and harmonically adept her improvisational skills are. With 12 Stars, Aldana puts all of her colorful sonic and emotional textures on display. - Matt Collar // AllMusic

<colgroup>
<col style="width: 34.8398%;">
<col style="width: 65.1614%;">
</colgroup>

Label:

Blue Note

Format:

Vinyl, LP, Album, Stereo

Released:

2022

Genre:

Jazz, Contemporary Jazz

Acclaimed vibraphonist and composer Joel Ross returns with his 3rd Blue Note album, The Parable of the Poet, an expansive album-length suite comprised of 7 evocative movements.

The suite is performed by a dynamic 8-piece ensemble with Ross joined by Immanuel Wilkins on alto saxophone, Maria Grand on tenor saxophone, Marquis Hill on trumpet, Kalia Vandever on trombone, Sean Mason on piano, Rick Rosato on bass & Craig Weinrib on drums. - Blue Note

<colgroup>
<col style="width: 26.0968%;">
<col style="width: 73.8478%;">
</colgroup>

Label:

Blue Note – 3891819

Format:

2 x Vinyl, LP, Album, Gatefold

Country:

Europe

Released:

15 Apr 2022

Genre:

Jazz

Style:

Post Bop

jaimie branch and Jason Nazary are Anteloper. There’s no pre-made template here, only sound. Only a starting point, the destruction of that point, and the telepathic creation of a new way out. The electronics incorporated by both players are navigational devices, transportation sound-crafts. The resulting output is freewheeling, other-worldly, improvisational music, inspired by the unknown and at home in the astro-world. But the driving force behind Anteloper’s psychedelic space music is not escapism, rather a complete immersion in the hyperreality of the present. Their music is made for destroying concepts of past and future, for confronting and embracing the moment, for the betterment of the here and now. It's music that is as rare and bewilderingly beautiful as the aquadelic pink dolphins surfing through the Amazon River. - On Bandcamp

Label:

International Anthem Recording Company – IARC0056

Format:

Vinyl, LP, Album, Limited Edition, Limousine Black

Country:

US

Released:

17 Jun 2022

Genre:

Electronic, Jazz

Style:

Avant-garde Jazz, Abstract

For decades, the voice of Jean Carne has been a crucial part of the American musical landscape, tying together generations of Jazz, Gospel, and R&B artists. It's an expanded edition of a 10-track suite called 'Actual Presence' that Niño self-released exclusively via his Bandcamp page in 2020.

In 2020, when the world entered into lockdown, Carlos engaged in his studio in Woodland Hills, CA, where he pored over tapes from past improv sessions. One in particular stuck out, a February 2019 Just Jazz gig with Devin Daniels, Jamael Dean, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, and Randy Gloss. On stage that night, he’d been confused and uncomfortable, he didn’t understand his relationship with an audience. “I had a revelation that night,” he says. “What I present in concert is sonic journeying—not a set of songs, or a program, or a performative energy.”

Using the Just Jazz tapes as a guide, he mixed and remixed, overdubbed synthesizer and pulled from his extensive battery of percussion instruments. He invited his collaborators—his friends, though we should all be so lucky to have friends as talented as these—to add their own overdubs, then, working the controls, he turned out a collection of songs that seem to have entire worlds encased within them. He worked with a sense of necessity. “The urgency was to share a message,” he says, “that we would get through this.” - International Anthem

Label:

International Anthem Recording Company – IARC 0047

Format:

2 x Vinyl, LP, Album

Country:

USA & Europe

Released:

22 Jul 2022

Genre:

Jazz

Style:

Fusion, Contemporary Jazz, Space-Age

International Anthem is proud to present 'Step on Step', a double LP collection of home recordings marking the de-facto eponymous debut album by enigmatic producer, arranger, and composer Charles Stepney (1931-1976). The night in question focused on drummer Tony Williams’ 1964 Blue Note album, Life Time, and the music conjured that night inspired Skinner to write an album’s worth of new music.

Skinner recorded an album of that music with a cellist, bass, and two saxophonists subsequently putting it aside, occasionally bringing it out for some attention in between his many other creative projects. Gradually, the record began to take shape as he embraced the studio recordings and accentuated their idiosyncrasies. - Nonesuch

Label:

Brownswood Recordings – BWOOD0257LP

Format:

Vinyl, LP, Album

Country:

UK

Released:

4 Nov 2022

Genre:

Jazz

Style:

Contemporary Jazz

ATALAYA is new work by bassist Dezron Douglas, and it is alive. That is, ‘alive’ in all the ways that jazz is at its best – as a pure and personal expression of Black Music channeled through time-honored traditions by a group of musicians who practice sonic coherence through musical unity. As Dezron puts it in the opening statement of his liner notes for the album: “Mysticism, Magic, Faith, Love, Power, Discernment! These are words that embody the creative process of Music.”

Followers of contemporary jazz might recognize Dezron for his bass work behind Pharoah Sanders, Louis Hayes, or Ravi Coltrane. Others might know him as the newest full-time member of the Trey Anastasio Band. Steady International Anthem listeners might remember him from the New York side of Makaya McCraven's Universal Beings. More recently we presented Force Majeure, Dezron’s sublime duo record with harpist Brandee Younger, which compiled the best of livestream performances from their Harlem apartment during the original covid lockdown. That album, which came out in December of 2020, reflected the speed and feeling of the moment while somehow simultaneously distracting from the harsh reality of it. It also captured a very vulnerable, intimate, and real impression of Dezron on double bass, sharing his power and truth without abandon.

ATALAYA, similarly, wasn’t processed in the lab, but rather, captured in the room. The realness factor is once again forefront in the sound; but the difference is in the energy and ambition of the music, which reaches for the stratosphere. Following a brief period at the Conservatoire de Paris, she quickly relocated to Berklee College of Music in Boston where she studied jazz on a full scholarship. A Dallas native, Beck started on drums at age eight and was mentored early on by other Dallas percussion stars, including Snarky Puppy's Robert "Sput" Searight and Stanley Clarke Band regular Mike Mitchell. He also gigged, working in producer Jah-Born's band, where he was exposed to a cross-pollinated blend of hip-hop, electronic, and DJ grooves. The pair hit it off and began jamming, combining DOMi's '70s jazz fusion-influenced style with Beck's kinetic blend of IDM, funk, and prog. Gigs followed, as did performances alongside Thundercat, Herbie Hancock, Ariana Grande, and others. They also continued their work with .Paak, signing to his Apeshit label and co-writing the song "Skate" off the rapper's Grammy-winning 2021 collaboration with Bruno Mars as Silk Sonic. In 2022, DOMi & JD BECK released "SMiLE" as the first single off their debut full-length, NOT TiGHT. Along with .Paak, the album also featured guest appearances by Herbie Hancock, Thundercat, Mac DeMarco, Kurt Rosenwinkel, and others. DOMi Louna was a teen protegé at Berklee by way of the Paris Conservatory; JD, three years her junior, had gigged since grade school around his hometown, Dallas—first in producer Jah-Born’s band where he duetted with MPC beatmakers and DJs spinning Dilla. In 2018, they were both invited to join an ensemble performing at the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) trade show and played in a room full of blaring instrumental demos, surrounded by a chaotic din. They bonded over gauche keyboard effects and mom jokes, and a more audible jam that night sparked interest in working more. A jazz trio at their core, Britain's GoGo Penguin have garnered well-earned plaudits for their distinctive, genre-bending sound that combines elements of forward-thinking post-bop with stylistic elements borrowed from indie rock and electronic dance music -- all without the aid of any actual electronic instrumentation.

Showcased in GoGo Penguin are the talents of pianist Chris Illingworth, bassist Nick Blacka, and drummer Rob Turner. Together on Man Made Object, they perform wholly original compositions that straddle the line between group improvisations and well-constructed thematic compositions.

Cuts like "All Res," "Branches Break," and the driving, punky "Smarra," all have the signifiers of jazz (sophisticated harmonies, kinetic rhythms, and an introverted, exploratory energy), but play out more like an adventurous Radiohead track, or the soundtrack music to a '70s heist film. The results bring to mind the work of similarly inclined artists like pianist Brad Mehldau and groups like the Bad Plus and Medeski, Martin & Wood. There's also a ruminative, impressionistic vibe running through much of the material on Man Made Object that positions GoGo Penguin at the vanguard of the new British jazz movement alongside the likes of trumpeter Matthew Halsall and bassist Jasper Hoiby's trio Phronesis. Comparisons aside, what sets GoGo Penguin apart from their contemporaries is their inventive group interplay and knack for dramatic arranging. Often, Illingworth will set up a pattern on piano, like the spritely, dancing intro to "Unspeakable Word," and Blacka and Turner will join in, answering his pattern with their own contrapuntal footwork. Just as you think the trio are going to lock up legs and topple over, they fall into a gorgeous minor-key stride and dissipate into a sweepingly ominous mid-song bass solo. Ultimately, it's these moments of dazzling group dynamics that help make Man Made Object a jazz-infused work of art on GoGo Penguin's own terms. — (via AllMusic)

Though 2014 Mercury Prize contenders GoGo Penguin are a jazz-schooled trio who now record for Blue Note, they’re a lot more interested in the nuances of groove, and in the contact points between acoustic and machine music, than in jazz as most beboppers know it. This Blue Note debut follows the minimalism-to-maelstrom paths of Fanfares and the more electronic v20, but many of these tracks started life on sequencers and then evolved through real-time group acoustic improv. Chris Illingworth’s looping piano motifs with their casual classical flourishes, Nick Blacka’s bowed bass and Rob Turner’s hustling drums sometimes fuse with a hip equanimity reminiscent of Robert Glasper; Weird Cat and the folksy Initiate show that GoGo tunes don’t have to be sparse; and the captivating Smarra is a highlight for its threading of an echoey, synth-mimicking throb through a humming undertow toward a deluge of cymbals. It still feels like clubbing music, and perhaps best heard live, but plenty of house and techno fans might be surprised by how good at partying three closet-jazzers can be. — (via The Guardian)

↓
Label: Blue Note
Format: 2 x Vinyl, LP, Album, Stereo
Repressed: 2025 / Originally released: 2016
Genre: Jazz
Style: Contemporary Jazz, Modern Jazz

File under: Jazz // Modern/Future Jazz
⦿

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0584/5434/3838/files/Screenshot-2025-07-13-222130_d1605657-e2ee-4f7f-a393-0dba7fbc7b6b.png?v=1752418294
various-artists-primasuara-a-definitive-collection-of-indonesias-best-kept-secret-jazz-chops
Various Artists - Primasuara: A Definitive Collection Of Indonesia's Best-Kept Secret Jazz Chops

Primasuara is a fresh take on the Indonesian jazz scene, featuring 11 tracks from talents of the archipelago such as Batavia Collective, We Are Neurotic, Littlefingers, and many more. With congas falling in the backdrop, Carter's bass guides Overall's beat as the frontline moves through the melody into post-bop improvisation. Wu-Tang's "C.R.E.A.M." is rendered in modal post-bop with gloriously subtle Afro-Latin beats as Overall and Allonce enter a polyrhythmic conversation buoying soprano sax, electric bass, and piano.

Twinned tenor saxophones introduce the piano vamp in Digable Planets' "Rebirth of Slick (Cool Like Dat)" before Wong's fiery piano nearly steals the show. OutKast's "SpottieOttieDopaliscious" is grooving post-bop, while Juvenile's closer "Back That Azz Up" showcases Overall's canny charts as his soloists build on harmonic and rhythmic palettes.

Overall's work has always been compelling, but on CREAM he makes a giant leap forward. Records.

That Wasn't A Dream is a statement of intent from two singular musicians. The Grammy-winning Palladino has reshaped what bass can be in popular music, performing with everyone from D’Angelo to Nine Inch Nails, from Erykah Badu to John Mayer. Meanwhile, Grammy-winner and two-time Producer of the Year-nominee Mills is one of today’s most sought-after producers and multi-instrumentalists, known for his work with Alabama Shakes, Bob Dylan, Fiona Apple, and Perfume Genius as well as his own acclaimed solo albums.

Pitchfork described the duo's 2021 debut Notes With Attachments as “the sound of consummate collaborators imagining a world where there’s no such thing as a lead performer.” On That Wasn't A Dream, they further dissolve any sense of hierarchy, imbuing their spontaneous compositions with an organic, precisely balanced inner logic. It's quietly audacious, a radical application of their ever-evolving musical chemistry.

To accompany the album announcement, they've shared the video for lead single “Taka,” a progression of instrumental athletics and generous melodic gestures that builds towards an almost kaleidoscopic funk.

That Wasn't a Dream was recorded over a two-month period in the legendary Studio A at Sound City Studios, the room Mills has helmed since 2018. These sessions pulled in collaborators old and new, most notably Sam Gendel, who performed throughout Notes With Attachments and contributed finishing touches for nearly every track on That Wasn’t a Dream. Though ultimately, this record feels like a deepening of the core relationship between Palladino and Mills.

If Notes With Attachments was about creating cohesion out of layered spontaneity, That Wasn’t a Dream finds coherence through restraint. As Palladino explains, some of the compositions grew from harmonically dense ideas that were later reduced to the barest essentials. "It came to light, really, that if we could make something work with the least possible ingredients, space could become the centerpiece," says Palladino.

It was also a chance to innovate; one early Palladino sketch, "What Is Wrong With You?," was Mills’s first opportunity to experiment with the prototype of a new instrument, the fretless baritone sustainer guitar, which Mills helped luthier Duncan Price to develop in 2021, and has since been used on numerous productions, as well as live performances with Joni Mitchell.

"The fretless sustainer can sound almost like a cross between a woodwind, brass, and bowed string instrument,” says Mills. “It’s a tough instrument to control or define.” That undefinable sound, along with a playful approach to minimalism, set the tone for the rest of the album’s writing and recording sessions that would take place almost three years later.

As a result, the music on That Wasn’t A Dream goes from being deceptively intimate to beautifully disordered. It’s music that rewards close listening: subversive but naturalistic, harnessing chaos with intention, unveiling new forms of beauty all along the way. — (via Label)

—

On their second record together, Mills and Palladino strip away all excess, building hushed, hypnotic grooves out of bass and fretless baritone guitar, and cushioning it all in copious empty space.

Consider the strange physics of being a passenger: You’re at once in motion and at rest, paradoxically traveling without moving. Scenery hurries by your window. Sometimes your eyes unfocus, scanning a flattened blur of color; other times they might zero in on a road sign or a single leaf, following it out of frame. When you arrive, it’s as if time and space are just behind your shoulder, catching up. That’s the feeling of listening to That Wasn’t a Dream, the spacious and surreal new album from Pino Palladino and Blake Mills. Each song achieves stillness through constant movement and resolution through continuous tension. Isolated melodies occasionally blend into a harmonic cloud before separating once again, drifting nebulously yet highly organized.

The jazz duo’s first record, 2021’s Notes With Attachments, mined similar territory, if a bit busier. Its compositions had the brisk motion of a crowded city sidewalk rather than the hazy liminality of a long train ride. Palladino, the 67-year-old Welsh sideman who’s played with D’Angelo, Don Henley, and De La Soul, hooked his basslines around syncopated percussion and legato tones. Mills, a sought-after producer who’s worked with Beck, Fiona Apple, and Alabama Shakes, carefully inserted staccato guitar plucks between the gaps in rhythmic lines. Alongside a who’s who of contemporary jazz musicians, including saxophonist Sam Gendel and drummer Chris Dave, Palladino and Mills constructed wholly new shapes out of interlocking elements.

On That Wasn’t a Dream, they started with similarly complex arrangements but methodically disassembled them, leaving plenty of air between each sound. “If we could make something work with the least possible ingredients, space could become the centerpiece,” Palladino said in a statement. The result is a sparse, enchanting record where time passes circuitously and phrases brush against each other like branches in the wind.

The grooves on Notes With Attachments could be spiky and nonintuitive, locking deeper into place with each additional layer. Here, Palladino and Mills operate with more restraint, patiently allowing a pocket to develop from a small handful of notes. That often means spotlighting the drums for several bars, cyclical patterns settling like a topsheet wafted above a mattress. The first 10 seconds of “What Is Wrong With You” establish its lysergic lurch with a simple combination of quarter-note hi-hats and a gently swinging kick drum. Palladino’s four-note bassline leaves a wide margin between the downbeat and the end of each measure; Mills’ baritone guitar melody slithers into view, smearing the tune together like a gestural painting. Midway through “Taka,” a bubbling stew of electro-funk, the synth and bass drop out completely, leaving a drum-machine sequence and percussion that sounds like clinking wine glasses to churn in place unimpeded.

A large part of the album’s magic comes from its textural palette. Closely recorded acoustic guitars sound like church bells; woodwinds resemble analog keyboards with the noise circuit cranked; human voices are mixed to the fore and kept dry, as if tracked in an anechoic chamber. Mills plays a fretless baritone sustainer guitar, which has an unclassifiable sound somewhere between a muted horn and a bowed bazantar. Gendel’s signature mutated saxophone makes a few appearances, but he also crafts wispy, barely there synth pads and an electronic wind controller patch that mimics a harp. Songs can quickly swing from organic to otherworldly, like on “Somnabulista,” where a third of the way through, a flute and vocal refrain gives way to the uncanny, CGI fusion you’d hear on a Mark Egan record. It’s bewitching; everything you’re hearing is familiar but just slightly off.

The centerpiece of That Wasn’t a Dream is the hallucinatory one-chord stunner “Heat Sink.” A chiming baritone figure reminiscent of Sam Wilkes’ more sentimental moments carries through its entirety, and a single splashy cymbal marks time, keeping each instrument on a loose tether as it explores the outer reaches. The band members (including Palladino’s son Rocco, also on bass) seem both locked in and completely independent, flickering around each other like atomic orbitals. Every few moments, distorted, overdriven melodies overlap and harmonize, resonant frequencies fusing into a softly glowing drone. “Heat Sink” is completely beguiling, a wall of sound that’s equally mesmerizing if admiring its towering totality or scrutinizing every exquisite detail. It feels both longer and shorter than its 14 minutes, a trick that Palladino and Mills pull off on every track on the album; each lyrical passage is an instruction manual for experiencing nonlinear time. That Wasn’t a Dream is music as quantum theory, using the expanse between speakers to pass through dimensions. — (via Pitchfork)

↓
Label: Impulse!, New Deal Music
Format: Vinyl, LP, Album
Released: 2025
Genre: Jazz
Style: Modern/Future Jazz

File under: Jazz // Modern/Future Jazz
⦿

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0584/5434/3838/files/a_910ca59f-b294-4ba8-bd7a-b63fb3e2b370.jpg?v=1763272536
moses-yoofee-trio-ocean
Moses Yoofee Trio - Ocean

Having built an impressive following on the back of live performances and social media, Berlin’s Moses Yoofee Trio shared Ocean their impatiently awaited debut mini-album, in November 2023.
