His Voices and Rhythms of the Creative Profile was issued on the city's cooperative independent Tribe label -- which also boasted outings from Marcus Belgrave, Doug Hammond, Mixed Bag, Wendell Harrison, and Phil Ranelin -- in 1974. McKinney's approach to jazz in the 1970s may have been funky and electric, but it was also idiosyncratic and vocal. Harold and Gwen McKinney handle the lead vocals, while a backing chorus of seven helps out on other pieces. This is an adventurous set, and along with his deep, funky electric piano grooves is a killer alternately swinging and soulful horn section fueled by Harrison and Belgrave, drummer Ron Jackson, percussionists Charles Miles and Billy Turner, as well as bassist Ed Pickins and Daryl Dybka on Moog! The highlights of the set are the stunning "Out of These Blues" with McKinney's Rhodes underscoring beautiful head and solo work by the horns, the stomping bop meets science fiction of "Corner Stone," and fine covers of Eddie Harris' "Freedom Jazz Dance" and Herbie Hancock's "Dolphin Dance" (with a set of lyrics by McKinney).”– All Music

Item description:

Artist:

Harold Mckinney

Title:

Voices And Rhythms Of The Creative Profile

Label:

Tribe, Pure Pleasure Records

Format:

Vinyl, LP, Album, Limited Edition, Reissue, Remastered

Pressing:

UK

Release Date:

This reissue: 2018 | Original: 1974

Genre:

Jazz

Style:

Soul-Jazz, Fusion

Catalog No:

PRSD-2233

Condition:

New

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0584/5434/3838/products/ba778dcfd9672151d128ae8d25dfa4846d468663.jpg?v=1646292825
ted-coleman-band-taking-care-of-business
Ted Coleman Band – Taking Care Of Business

Heavily influenced by the likes of Bobby Hutcherson and Roy Ayers, ‘Taking Care Of Business’ is full of positive, uptempo soul/jazz gems, featuring Ted Coleman’s wonderful vibraphone playing throughout. Not only did Coleman both sing and play piano, synth and vibes on the record, but he also designed the artwork himself; a true DIY LP if ever there was one. This DIY ethos even extended to the New Jersey label JSR who originally pressed the LP, describing themselves as: “a new company that helps working club bands that can sell their own records. JSR artists spend no money for recording or production costs, and there are no recording contracts.” This could well explain the album’s rarity, with original copies selling on Discogs for eye-wateringly high prices.

-

Ted Coleman cut his teeth playing local clubs and venues in his hometown of Pittsburgh, where his skills on vibes and mallet percussion quickly earned him popularity in the local area. ‘Taking Care Of Business’ was his very first studio album, blending latin rhythms with smooth jazz and soul stylings. The musicianship on the record is striking, the vocals mellow and soulful, the lyrics warm and tender: put simply this album is designed to warm the heart. Their music, an innovative but accessible blend of free jazz and funk, both invoked and expanded on the ideas of artists as diverse as Pharoah Sanders, Curtis Mayfield, the Last Poets, “Mother Nature”-era Temptations, and Hubert Laws. They recorded a single album for the Dogtown imprint in 1972; the following year, not long before they disbanded, they cut several more sides—apparently in a studio, as there’s no audience to be heard and some multitracking is evident—at Columbia University. Unique and beautifully recorded, with a breezy feel brought by the synthesizers, Sacbé could be likened to what Azymuth was doing at the same time in Brazil. Available as a vinyl-only limited pressing Deluxe Tip-On LP, coming with its original printed innersleeve, remastered by The Carvery.

Sacbé was composed of Eugenio (keyboards), Enrique (electric bass) & Fernando Toussaint (drums), three brothers hailing from the huge Mexico city, and their friend and sax player Alejandro Campos. Growing up in a family of musicians, they quickly became familiar with jazz music. However they were mostly self-taught, most of them choosing at first to work and study outside the music industry, but somehow, Eugenio had the opportunity to start studies at the Berklee Music University. Before leaving, he deeply wanted to play jazz with his brothers. That’s how Sacbé was created on a hot day of October 1976.

The band then built step by step a challenging repertoire including Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Weather Report, Milton Nascimento, Focus, Passport, and many more… Gradually, Eugenio started to compose more tracks, and through a cooperative work of arrangement, Sacbé ended up playing only their own compositions. That was not an easy choice for the band, resulting in a lot fewer opportunities to play in bars and clubs at night, while they were cumulating small jobs during the daytime. But their dedication, tightness, and integrity started to attract a wider audience thanks to their sessions at the Musicafé and helped Sacbé to assert its imprint within Mexico’s creative artistic circles. A group of artists with similar attitudes was created and they began working almost as a team, holding live shows, exhibitions, and dance performances, all with a very unique and creative proposal. It’s at this period that the band met Luis Gil, a young designer and recording engineer, who had access to one of the best studios of the city called LAGAB. Recording at nights and weekends for free, the Toussaint brothers had, therefore, the chance to really put their band quite literally under the microscope. - Bandcamp

Sacbé by Sacbé

Label: Favorite Recordings – FVR169LP

Format: Vinyl, LP, Album, Reissue

Country: France

Released: 8 Dec 2020

Genre: Jazz

Style: Fusion, Soul-Jazz

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0584/5434/3838/products/b9c15e44d9429db083a2336a5fe8bb4f2b9f4d86.jpg?v=1646293666
misa-blam-secanja
Miša Blam – Sećanja

Miša Blam’s - Sećanja (Memories), one of the most sought of, rarest and cult ex-Yugoslavian jazz LP’s - is finally reissued, sourced and fully licensed straight from vaults of Jugodisk (Belgrade, Serbia). And where better than on the Everland’s Everland-Yu imprint dedicated to the unheard sound of Yugoslavia! This LP, kept tight in private ex-Yu collectors cabinets and championed by jazz dance DJ’s across the planet, was recorded in 1979 and released in only 1000 copies in 1980 by the Beograd Disk label. The LP is filled with jazz-funk, bop styles, latin jazz and even Gospel live recordings by the Golden gate quartet (recorded by Miša himself) all accompanied by the crème de la crème of Yugoslavia’s jazz-funk instrumentalists at the time (Jelenko Milaković, Lazar Tošić, Stjepko Gut, Jovan Maljoković, Josip boček…). Miša Blam (1947 - 2014) was an influential Serbian jazz composer, arranger, publicist, festival organizer and Radio-Television Belgrade’s long-time collaborator (jazz and folk orchestras, recording engineer, music director…). But Miša was first and foremost a bass player! Having played with numerous worldwide famous jazz cats he often talked of his work in the Chet Baker - Sal Nistico trio while living in New York and playing with them for two years (or rather bailing Sal out of prison or buying off Chet’s trumpet on his behalf from the pawn shop). The album perhaps represents an unusual collection of songs mostly composed by Miša Blam himself during his world wide spanning jazz pursuits in the 70’s. Unusual for it does not stand alone as a cohesive album release but as a collection of works that we were lucky to be rewarded with in his very sparse discography consisting of: one EP, this LP and one cassette tape… Finally this collection showcases what was Miša all about – and that was jazz bass in all its marvelous forms – from lacing dreamy ballads with his impeccable upright bass fiddle play to grooving on his fender bass on the jazz-funk monster Sećanje which could be included on any acid jazz compilation of the 90s (check out Balkan Express...). Masterfully executed and kept to its original sound this release will keep your ears busy and open to the sound of ex Yugoslavian jazz and the sound of unheard Yugoslavia – where-else but on Everland-Yu! - Bandcamp

Label: Everland – YU003

Format: Vinyl, LP, Reissue, Remastered

Country: Europe

Released: 2021

Genre: Jazz, Funk / Soul

Style: Jazz-Funk, Latin Jazz, Swing, Gospel

Composer and saxophonist Brian Brown produced some of the most refined Australian jazz recordings during the 1970s. A versatile musician whose distinct impressionist music melded modern jazz with the outer limits of free experimentation. Differing from his eco-jazz composition Wildflowers heard on the recent Roundtable compilation Pyramid Pieces, Carlton Streets explores the polar opposite, offering jazz impressions of the urban environment. Innovative not only for its moody, nuanced jazz-funk sensibility, Liberated Brother also translates the uncommonly strong passion of Irvine's political and philosophical views into its grooves, creating music of rare sincerity and ambition. While the record's first-half features longer, more meditative songs, like the Latin-inspired title tune and "Blues Wel-Don," the second side of Liberated Brother commands the most attention. With sterling contributions from guitarist Tommy Smith, bassist Roland Wilson, and drummer Napoleon Revels-Bey, cuts like "Mr. Clean" and "Sister Sanctified" (later sampled by Boogie Down Productions for the rap classic "My Philosophy") achieve a deeply funky consciousness forged from elements of jazz, soul, and psychedelia; "Juggah Buggah" even features Irvine on Moog synthesizer, further expanding the LP's cosmic reach. - Jason Ankeny // AllMusic

Label: P-Vine Records
Format: Vinyl, LP, Reissue
Reissue: 2023 / Original: 1972
Genre: Jazz, Funk / Soul
Style: Soul-Jazz, Funk

Japanese P-Vine Records import copies of Prince Billy Mahdi Wright's rare soul-jazz album 'You Got Dat Wright' from 1982.

"A wonderful bit of lost spiritual soul jazz from Chicago -- recorded in the early 80s, but with a progressive and righteous feel that's very much in the 70s Strata East vein! Until now….

Welcome to the brainchild of Gilles Germain and Carmen Fabro, a French/Italian husband and wife team of restaurateurs and film producers operating in Sydney during the 1970s. (Yes it’s all very strange…) The highlight undoubtedly being the album Six To Six, a session recorded in Sydney in 1979 by a group of touring Japanese jazz musicians led by guitarist Hiroshi Yasukawa, and a forgotten and still undocumented Mauritian cabaret singer performing under the alias ‘Claudia’. Sitting somewhere between spacey Balearic disco, haunting soul and hectic funk reminiscent of electric Miles Davis, the Six To Six LP is a curious beast to say the least.

The brand new reissue is now available courtesy of Northside Records & Roundtable. - Bandcamp

Label: Northside Records ‎– NR016LP, The Roundtable ‎– SIR014LP

Format: Vinyl, LP, Album, Reissue, Remastered

Country: Australia

Released: 22 Apr 2017

Genre: Jazz, Funk / Soul

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0584/5434/3838/products/b4c10ec9c7e44a63f16f89d7040034cc8cd0785d.jpg?v=1646297761
creativeartsensemblewithbjcrowleyonestepout
Creative Arts Ensemble With B.J. One of the most sought after and highly-regarded titles to have appeared on Tom Albach's celebrated Nimbus West imprint, One Step Out is a timeless work of spiritualized jazz. A true gem from the Los Angeles jazz underground, the album was pianist and composer Kaeef Ruzadun Ali's first recording as leader of the Creative Arts Ensemble, the only large ensemble group that emerged directly from Horace Tapscott's legendary Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra community jazz group.

-

A Los Angeles native, Kaeef was introduced to the Tapscott circle in the late 1970s. His first experience of the Arkestra's ethos was through PAPA tenorist Michael Session, who took him to the famous "Great House" at 2412 South Western Ave., LA -- a large mansion house which members of the Arkestra had taken over as a space for communal living. Life in the Great House was a continuous stream of music, dance and community events. "When I walked in there," recalled Kaeef, "it was like this whole rush came over me, just from going in the front door -- It was like a very, very warm feeling of love. I went and I came out with 'Flashback Of Time', and that was my first arrangement." Kaeef quickly became a significant contributor of compositions to the Arkestra's songbook -- his piece "New Horizon" would be recorded by Horace Tapscott for the latter's Tapscott Sessions series. But "Flashback Of Time" would eventually appear on One Step Out, played by the new group he had put together from stalwart Arkestra members.

-

Inspired by both Tapscott's example and by the Art Ensemble of Chicago, Kaeef had wanted to follow their lead by assembling a larger unit. Featuring seasoned Arkestra regulars including reedsman Dadisi Komolafe, drummer Woody "Sonship" Theus and altoist Gary Bias, with veterans Henry "The Skipper" Franklin on bass and George Bohannon on trombone, One Step Out is a key document of the Los Angeles radical jazz underground. Featuring the sanctified vocals of Kaeef's sister, B. J. Crowley, the album is a tour de force of spiritually energized independent jazz music. – Pure Pleasure Records

Label: Nimbus West Records – NS-913

Format: Vinyl, LP, Album, Limited Edition, Reissue, 180 gr

Country: UK

Released: 2021

Genre: Jazz

Style: Contemporary Jazz, Free Jazz

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0584/5434/3838/products/71ad62829790e3afa22a08aea7e8046456e2d8f7.jpg?v=1646297786
joel-fairstein-umbra
Joel Fairstein – Umbra

Rare Jazz Funk Fusion Lp private label from 1978

Hailing from Knoxville, Tennesee, Joel Fairstein has earned critial praise as Jazz pianist, composer, producer, and studio musician. Also featured on these recordings are some serious all-star guest musicians from the likes of Ronald Wilson (Sun Ra Arkestra) and Jimmy Lewis (Horace Silver, Idris Muhammad). – Tidal Waves

Label:

Tidal Waves Music – TWM75

Format:

Vinyl, LP, Album, Limited Edition, Reissue, Black Ice

Country:

US

Released:

31 Dec 2021

Genre:

Jazz, Funk / Soul

Style:

Fusion

Skull Session is a monster of an album that keeps Nelson’s 1960s trademark sound but takes a deep dive into Jazz-funk and adds disco, groovy soul, Bossa nova and electronic funk in the process. Oliver Nelson successfully included electronic instruments (like the Moog & ARP) and the incorporation of the rhythms that are often associated with them…all this without detracting in any way from the high-quality recordings he became known for. Every track is an original composition with a strong melody line and an imaginative arrangement…all living up to Oliver Nelson’s tremendous reputation as an arranger and composer. Fischer – Circles

1970 was a time for heady experimentation in popular music, but very few records and even fewer on major labels come close to matching the stylistic ground covered by William S. Fischer's album Circles. African-American composer/arranger/keyboardist/saxophonist Fischer grew up woodshedding with the likes of Ray Charles, Fats Domino, Muddy Waters, and Percy Mayfield'and then took a sudden left turn by studying electronic music in Vienna during the mid-'60s. There, he met Joe Zawinul, and ended up penning five of the six tunes on Zawinul's groundbreaking 1968 album The Rise and Fall of the Third Stream. Fischer went on to arrange for Herbie Mann, who signed him to his Embryo imprint for Atlantic Records; Circles was Fischer's one and only release for the label.

And he didn't waste the opportunity; an utterly mindblowing mix of Sly Stone funk, heavy Hendrix-y metal, Southern soul, jazz fusion, and Stockhausen-esque explorations on the Moog synthesizer, Circles enlisted the same band (bassist Ron Carter, guitarists Eric Weissberg and Hugh McCracken) that Fischer had worked with while acting as Musical Director on Eugene McDaniels' underground classic Outlaw, complemented by drummer Billy Cobham and a five-piece cello section. With a line-up like that, it's little wonder that the artistic reach of Circles is breathtaking, but it somehow manages to cohere according to its own internal, crazy logic; it remains one of the most adventuresome and collectible releases of its day. — via Label

↓
Label: Real Gone Music
Format: Vinyl, LP, Album, Limited Edition, Reissue, Stereo, Black Ice
Reissued: 2022 / Original: 1971
Genre: Jazz, Electronic, Rock
Style: Leftfield, Abstract, Jazz-Rock, Experimental
⦿

Wendell Harrison was born in Detroit in 1942 where he began formal jazz studies for piano, clarinet and tenor saxophone. The Tribe label, one of the brightest lights of America’s 1970s jazz underground, receives the Now-Again reissue treatment. This is your chance to indulge in the music and story of one of the most meaningful, local movements of the 20th Century Black American experience, one that expanded outwards towards the cosmos. In the words of the collective themselves, “Music is the healing force of the universe.” Included in an extensive, oversized booklet, Larry Gabriel and Jeff “Chairman” Mao take us through the history of the Tribe, in a compelling story that delves not just into the history of the label and its principals, but into the story of Black American empowerment in the latter half of the 20th Century. And it is simply mind-blowing, to say the least! The LP features 10 unreleased tracks in a similar Balearic vein as featured on the single.

Incredibly, it was only just a few months ago that these tracks were rediscovered on some old tapes by band members Lutz Boberg and Frank Simon. Could anyone imagine that two physics students from a small German town could create such beautiful, thrilling music in their home studio? Although the technical aspects in the creation of the band's earliest tracks may have been straightforward, the outcome is high-quality, creative, modern jazz-funk, with one step in the electro-funk genre due to the use of a drum machine and synthesizer basslines. The album features mostly 4-track recordings, based mainly on the musicians' weapons of choice: a DX21 keyboard (later updated to the legendary DX7) and a guitar. Many things had to be done live in just one take, though the artists were unafraid of using overdubbing techniques to weave their instrumental journeys. The DIY aesthetics just add more beauty and uniqueness to the songs and compositions, and the result is an extremely harmonic work of undeniable musicality. Ghia delivers Balearic jazz-funk at its finest.

Though the music was recorded in Germany, Ghia had a true relationship with the Balearic region and effortlessly applied the vibes to their compositions. As a side note, one track on their earliest demo tapes was called "3 AM at Moëf Gaga" and we did not know what it meant. The band explained that Moëf Gaga is a nightclub on the Spanish coast that is actually still active today. Boberg and Simon, the two original band members of Ghia, visited the club in the early 80s and spent their holiday close to the sea. With their music, they intended to create a summery vibe, capturing a relaxed and soulful view of the seashore, likely with a drink in hand... The result was his iconic 1971 album, Pieces of a Man, where Heron’s powerful and prescient critiques were shaped into rhythmic proto-rap form, and backed by a band (led by career-long collaborator Brian Jackson) who complemented his incisive poetry through jazz-funk and blues compositions. From his ingeniously satiric “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised,” to paying homage to his jazz influences on “"Lady Day and John Coltrane", to the title track’s unravelling of strife - Pieces of a Man is an intelligent and soulful documentation of the Black experience in America. — The Analog Vault

—

Gil Scott-Heron's 1971 album Pieces of a Man set a standard for vocal artistry and political awareness that few musicians will ever match. His unique proto-rap vocal style influenced a generation of hip-hop artists, and nowhere is his style more powerful than on the classic "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised." Even though the media - the very entity attacked in this song - has used, reused, and recontextualized the song and its title so many times, the message is so strong that it has become almost impossible to co-opt. Musically, the track created a formula that modern hip-hop would follow for years to come: bare-bones arrangements featuring pounding basslines and stripped-down drumbeats. Although the song features plenty of outdated references to everything from Spiro Agnew and Jim Webb to The Beverly Hillbillies, the force of Scott-Heron's well-directed anger makes the song timeless.

More than just a spoken word poet, Scott-Heron was also a uniquely gifted vocalist. On tracks like the reflective "I Think I'll Call It Morning" and the title track, Scott-Heron's voice is complemented perfectly by the soulful keyboards of Brian Jackson. On "Lady Day and John Coltrane," he not only celebrates jazz legends of the past in his words but in his vocal performance, one that is filled with enough soul and innovation to make Coltrane and Billie Holiday nod their heads in approval. More than three decades after its release, Pieces of a Man is just as - if not more - powerful and influential today as it was the day it was released. - (via AllMusic)

↓
Label: Flying Dutchman, BGP Records
Format: 2 x Vinyl, 12", 45 RPM, Album, Reissue, Remastered, Stereo, 180g, Gatefold
Reissued: 2022 / Original: 1971
Genre: Jazz
Style: Poetry, Soul-Jazz, Jazz-Funk

File under: TAV Essential Listening
File under: Jazz // Soul-Jazz
⦿

The musical partnership between vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson and tenor saxophonist Harold Land fully blossomed on the 1970 album San Francisco, which found the musicians moving into fusion territory with relentlessly grooving tunes like “Goin’ Down South” and “Ummh” counterbalanced by exploratory pieces like the mesmerizing “Prints Tie.” This Blue Note Classic Vinyl Edition is stereo, all-analog, mastered by Kevin Gray from the original master tapes, and pressed on 180g vinyl at Optimal. - Blue Note

<colgroup>
<col style="width: 49.9368%;">
<col style="width: 49.9368%;">
</colgroup>

Label:

Blue Note – 4859548, UMe – 4859548, Blue Note – BST 84362

Series:

Blue Note Classic Vinyl Series

Format:

Vinyl, LP, Album, Reissue, Stereo, 180 g

Country:

Worldwide

Released:

20th Jan 2023

Genre:

Jazz

Style:

Jazz-Funk, Post Bop

Obscure and Rare album of Spacey Fusion grooves, played by a group that includes Robert Rockwell on reeds, plus Bobby Lyle on piano and electric piano. On the back, Dean's drawing has Carr with saxophonist Brian Smith, guitarist Chris Spedding, drummer John Marshall, bassist Jeff Clyne and sax, oboe and pianist Karl Jenkins in a circle, the central core of a movement and the basis for its activity.

Recorded over four days in January 1970, Elastic Rock didn't sound like any other British jazz album. Light drums, gentle melodic horns, piano and a solid bassline serve as the perfect bed for Spedding's graceful bluesy guitar melodies. The outstanding Solar Plexus, the much-loved third album from Ian Carr and Nucleus, was first released on Vertigo in 1971. Inevitably, original copies are now very tricky to score and, like all the Nucleus records, it’s aged ridiculously well.

Under bandleader Carr, Nucleus existed as a fluid line-up of inventive, skilled musicians. This constant evolution and revolution was all part of the continuous musical exploration and discovery that took jazz to new levels. And the music has kept relevant. To steal a line from a review of our re-issue of Roots, when it comes to anything Nucleus “it’s basically already hip-hop”.

We'll let Ian describe this one: "I wrote Solar Plexus' last year with the help of an Arts Council grant. It is based on two short themes which are stated at the beginning (Elements I & I1). The first theme is angular and has a slow, crab-like movement: the second theme is direct, simple and diatonic. CHANGING TIME and SPIRIT LEVEL explore the first theme and BEDROCK DEADLOCK and TORSO explore the second one. SNAKEHIPS DREAM tries to fuse both themes. (The title is a reference to the famous dancer 'Snakehips' Johnson)."

Solar Plexus features the same lineup as Elastic Rock and We'll Talk About It Later, but they're augmented by six guests, three of which play brass. Carr himself had almost full control of the writing and it does feel very different to the previous albums. It's more of a jazz record loosely based on a rock foundation rather than jazz fusion jamming.

This Be With re-issue, re-mastered from the original analogue tapes, shows off just why this deserves to be back in press. - Be With Records

Label:

Be With Records – BEWITH127LP

Format:

Vinyl, LP, Album, Reissue

Country:

UK

Released:

2023

Genre:

Jazz, Rock

Style:

Fusion, Jazz-Rock

The distinctive rolling grooves, growling basslines and blasting horns of Snakehips Etcetera combined to present Nucleus's most energetic record. However, the saxophonist’s bold, Coltrane-tailored improvisation and Jones’ persistent polyrhythmic prodding soon elevates the tension with Foster’s upper register acrobatics over a nagging ostinato bass and piano figure, which feels like a forerunner to McCoy Tyner’s glorious ‘Walk Spirit, Talk Spirit’.

Davis’ ever-imaginative bass and Jones’ crisp, animated brush work are as much a feature of Foster’s ‘Shiny Stockings’ as is his finely cut, late-night melody; Green’s ‘ME’ is a short sharp swinger giving space to the lesser known pianist, and ‘Elvin’s Guitar Blues’ is 80 seconds of Jones’ finger picked blues guitar before Foster picks up the chorus for a purposeful solo.

The centrepiece in many ways is the surprising Jones/Davis 11’35” duet on Gershwin’s ‘Summertime’, a spontaneous studio improvisation that unfolds out of Davis’ classical arco introduction. Joined by Jones’ whispering mallets on tom and cymbals, Davis draws deep on his classical and jazz pedigree, orchestrating the theme, contrasting melancholic layers and unexpected twists before his pizzicato solo entrances with dense lyrical clusters, swoops and double time abandon.

Jones switches from subtle circular brush strokes to a thundering Afro-centric mallet solo which subsides under Davis’ quivering tremolo bow coda.
