Despite all of the obstacles and subsequent tragedy, this quintet became legendary over the years justifiably so — and developed into a role model for all progressive jazz combos to come. The combined power of Dolphy and Little; exploring overt but in retrospect not excessive dissonance and atonality — made them a target for critics but admired among the burgeoning progressive post-bop scene. With the always stunning shadings of pianist Mal Waldron, the classical-cum-daring bass playing of Richard Davis, and the colorful drumming of alchemistic Ed Blackwell, there was no stopping this group.

Live at the legendary Five Spot Café in New York City, this band set the Apple, and the entire jazz world on their collective ears. "Fire Waltz" demonstrates perfectly how the bonfire burns from inside the soul of these five brilliant provocateurs, as Dolphy's sour alto and Little's dour trumpet signify their new thing. Dolphy's solo is positively furious, while Blackwell nimbly switches up sounds within the steady 3/4 beat. "Bee Vamp" does not buzz so much as it roars in hard bop trim. A heavy tandem line breaks and separates in the horn parts like booster rockets. Blackwell is even more amazing, and Dolphy's ribald bass clarinet set standards that still influences players of the instrument. Where "The Prophet" is a puckery blues, it is also open armed with minor phrasings and stretched harmonics. This is where Waldron and Davis shine in their terra cotta facades of roughly hewn accompaniments to Dolphy and Little's bold flavored statements. A shorter alternate take of "Bee Vamp" is newly available, shorter by two-and-a-half minutes and with a clipped introductory melody.

Most hail this first volume, and a second companion album from the same sessions, as music that changed the jazz world as much as Ornette Coleman and John Coltrane's innovative excursions of the same era. Prestige president Bob Weinstock lauded them “the Louis Armstrong Hot Five of the modern era.” In 1956, when Columbia Records wanted to sign Miles away from Prestige, he still had significant time on his 3-year contract. The results were magic. Ever since Jazz Samba, the jazz marketplace had been flooded with bossa nova albums, and the overexposure was beginning to make the music seem like a fad. Getz/Gilberto made bossa nova a permanent part of the jazz landscape not just with its unassailable beauty, but with one of the biggest smash hit singles in jazz history - "The Girl From Ipanema," a Jobim classic sung by João's wife, Astrud Gilberto, who had never performed outside of her own home prior to the recording session.

Beyond that, most of the Jobim songs recorded here also became standards of the genre - "Corcovado" (which featured another vocal by Astrud), "So Danço Samba," "O Grande Amor," a new version of "Desafinado." With such uniformly brilliant material, it's no wonder the album was such a success but, even apart from that, the musicians all play with an effortless grace that's arguably the fullest expression of bossa nova's dreamy romanticism ever brought to American listeners. Getz himself has never been more lyrical, and Gilberto and Jobim pull off the harmonic and rhythmic sophistication of the songs with a warm, relaxed charm. This music has nearly universal appeal; it's one of those rare jazz records about which the purist elite and the buying public are in total agreement. After a classic Basie Piano intro the first track "Doubling Blues" swings like mad, but then you notice there's something different going on when the solos start. What's different is that Basie is playing Organ for most of the rest of the track and the difference is amazing. The little Piano phrases that we're all so used to hearing Basie play aren't there. Then after six minutes the piano comes back in and we finish track with Basie as we started. For more of Basie's organ playing have a listen to "One-Nighter" — a lovely medium tempo number on which he plays a restrained introductory solo, before Zoot Sims plays the opening tenor sax solo.

The running time is just under 50 minutes, and with only five tracks on the album that tells you that the musicians were given plenty of opportunity to stretch out. This is a good approach, since Tatum never subsides to simple comping; he just keeps soloing away under Webster's rich tenor tones until Webster stops playing, and then keeps on to the end. So, although this is billed as a group effort, it's not a group of equals or really one in which the players are cooperating with each other. Tatum might as well be playing solo, since he takes very little account of what's happening around him. Granz makes it work by varying the volume of the different instruments in the mix, and the result is a fascinating study in contrasts. — via AllMusic

↓
Label: Pablo Records, Acoustic Sounds
Series: The Pablo Series
Format: Vinyl, LP, Album, Limited Edition, Reissue, Mono, 180g
Reissued: 2025 / Original Release: 1958
Genre: Jazz
Style: Swing

File under: Audiophile Jazz
⦿

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0584/5434/3838/files/AAPJ_164__186065__03132024015252-1594.jpg?v=1741690322
milt-jackson-john-coltrane-bags-trane-2024-atlantic-75-series-analogue-productions-reissue
Milt Jackson & John Coltrane - Bags & Trane (2024 Atlantic 75 Series / Analogue Productions Reissue)

Vibraphonist Milt Jackson and tenor saxophonist John Coltrane make for a surprisingly complementary team on this 1959 studio session, their only joint recording. AllMusic notes that with fine backup by pianist Hank Jones, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Connie Kay, Bags and Trane stretch out on two of Jackson's originals (including "The Late Late Blues") and three standards: a romping "Three Little Words," "The Night We Called It a Day," and the rapid "Be-Bop." The highlight of the set is the eponymous opening track, which just oozes late-night cool. — via Label
—
Part of the 75 historic titles hand-picked and supervised by Analogue Productions CEO Chad Kassem
Mastered from the original master tapes or best available source by top mastering engineers
Cut at 45rpm and pressed on 180-gram heavyweight vinyl

↓
Label: Atlantic, Analogue Productions
Series: Atlantic 75 Audiophile Series
Format: 2 x Vinyl, 12", 45 RPM, Album, Limited Edition, Reissue, Remastered, Stereo, 180g
Reissued: 2024 / Original Release: 1961
Genre: Jazz
Style: Hard Bop

File under: Audiophile Jazz
⦿

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0584/5434/3838/files/AAPA_063-45__181812__09122023122330-6361.jpg?v=1741944920
sarah-vaughan-crazy-and-mixed-up
Sarah Vaughan – Crazy And Mixed Up (Analogue Productions Reissue)

The Penguin Guide to Jazz Recordings considers Crazy and Mixed Up to be possibly Sarah Vaughan's best album for the Pablo label. It is one of five artists: Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, and Miles Davis. Much can be made for Ellington being the logical choice. Edward Kennedy Ellington (1899-1974) lived the entire history of jazz. He led arguably the most important big band of the swing era while also recording widely in smaller formats. But Ellington considered his music well beyond the definition of jazz. The extended compositions championed by Wynton Marsalis in the 1980s and '90s, germinated in the band book of Ellington.

The three suites included here were recorded between 1959 and 1972. The Queen's Suite was composed shortly after the coronation of Great Britain's Elizabeth II in 1955 and contains a solo piano (supported by string bass) composition, "Single Petal of a Rose." The Goutelas and Uwis Suites are 1970s products. But listening to these pieces, the thread of Ellington, that creative remnant that matured in the late 1920s is in fully flowered evidence on these relatively late career recordings. These pieces make it hard to dispute Ellington's supremacy in American jazz. — (via All About Jazz)

—

180-gram vinyl
Mastered by Matthew Lutthans at The Mastering Lab from the original analog tape
Pressed at Quality Record Pressings
Housed in Stoughton Printing tip-on jacket

Vinyl Tracklist

The Queen's Suite
A1 Sunset And The Mocking Bird
A2 Lightning Bugs And Frogs
A3 Le Sucrier Velour
A4 Northern Lights
A5 The Single Petal Of A Rose
A6 Apes And Peacocks

The Goutelas Suite
B1 Fanfare
B2 Goutelas
B3 Get-with-Itness
B4 Something
B5 Having At It
B6 Fanfare

The Uwis Suite
B7 Uwis
B8 Klop
B9 Loco Madi

↓
Label: Pablo Records / Analogue Productions
Format: Vinyl, LP, Album, Reissue, Stereo, Gatefold, 180g
Reissued: 2025 / Originally Released: 1976
Genre: Jazz
Style: Big Band

File under: Audiophile Jazz
⦿

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0584/5434/3838/files/AAPJ_187__192255__12182024093544-4203.jpg?v=1768636911
