Independent artists mainly drove the vaporwave craze that peaked a few years and showed a knack for transforming the accessible into something transcendent, playing with the opulent aesthetics of Tokyo city pop and the ease of modern technology to evoke an imagined past in creating the modern.

Taipei-based trio Mong Tong is of this decade-spanning ilk, making music that wavers like a well-played audio cassette and sounds like it belongs in the dramatic cutscenes of an early 1990s Capcom installment. On full-length debut Mystery, the group's human members, brothers Hom Yu and Jiun Chi, put together seven tracks of a thick atmosphere, taking concrete media influences and creating something celestial. The trio's third member is a noncorporeal computerized member, as they tell it -- just as important a component in the creative process. The album sees them joining the Guruguru Brain label that serves as home to psych-rock group Kikagaku Moyo (two members of which founded the label).

Largely based around samples and synths, Mystery is nonetheless richly multi-instrumental. That is clear from the ornate "Intro" that opens the album, where Hom's bass adds an urgent undertone to darkly ornate keys. The title track follows, and here, Chi's guitar goes heavy on the wahs, sounding like back alleys and neon lights over a melody that sways upward. Both are equally important in driving forward the shimmering "Chakra". Vintage vocal samples open ominous "Jou-tau", on which the occasional soaring of synths cuts through the languid wailing of guitar. – Pop Matters

↓
Label: Guruguru Brain ‎– GGB-022LP
Format: Vinyl, LP, Album, Limited Edition
Released: 2020
Genre: Electronic, Rock
Style: Psychedelic Rock, Experimental
⦿

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0584/5434/3838/products/403198faa272a325b4d13da29d9ece0bba05de0b.jpg?v=1646293097
kikagakumoyostonegarden
Kikagaku Moyo ‎– Stone Garden

Stone Garden started in a basement studio in Prague with a nearly continuous session over several days and nights. While their decade-long career can be summarized as a series of kaleidoscopic explorations through lands and dimensions far and near, there’s a strong intention in each of their works to take the listener to a particular place, however real or abstract they may be. In that sense, the title and cover art for the band’s fifth and final album draws you into a magical mass of land surrounded by water—but the couch suggests that ‘Kumoyo Island’may not be a fleeting stop, but rather a place of respite, where one could pause and take it all in.

Reconvening at Tsubame Studios in Asakusabashi, Tokyo, where their earliest material had been recorded, the five members of Kikagaku Moyo found new inspiration in a familiar and comfortable environment. With their adopted homebase of Amsterdam under lockdown and their touring activities halted due to the pandemic, the band felt a renewed sense of freedom being back in shitamachi, or the old downtown area of their hometown. With unrestricted time in the studio, they began to build upon the demos and song fragments they’d amassed since their last tour. In the 1.5 months spent in Tokyo, everything started to come together.

“Monaka”, its name taken from a type of Japanese wafer sweets, takes melodic inspiration from traditional minyofolk styles, while “Yayoi Iyayoi” is a rare instance of the band singing in their native tongue, its evocative lyrics utilizing archaic words taken from old poetry and nature books found in one of the many second-hand bookstores of Tokyo. For “Meu Mar”, an Erasmos Carlos cover, the original Portuguese lyrics were translated into English, then to Japanese. Strangely enough, the words seem to conjure an image of the protagonist floating among the clouds, looking down upon Tokyo Bay.

In fact, it may be possible to draw a parallel between the topography of the band’s home country—an island nation, surrounded by bodies of water—and the mysterious isle of Kumoyo. It’s up to the listener to decide. - Guruguru Brain

<colgroup>
<col style="width: 49.9331%;">
<col style="width: 49.9331%;">
</colgroup>

Label:

Guruguru Brain - GGB-028LP

Format:

Vinyl, LP, Album

Country:

Worldwide

Released:

July 2022

Genre:

Rock

Style:

Psychedelic Rock

Subtropic Cosmos is the international debut album by Japanese artist Hitomi Moriwaki. Composed and recorded at her Fukuoka home during the worldwide pandemic between 2020-2022, the album was produced by Hideki Urawa, who has also worked with Kikagaku Moyo and other musical acts on Guruguru Brain. Hitomi Moriwaki is a multidisciplinary artist working with a wide range of mediums besides music, including: magazines, ceramics, digital art, and animation. “Subtropic Cosmos” in particular is a wonderful work that conveys the “joy of making things” to listeners, as it is filled with various influences from her diverse activities. As suggested by the album title, most of the songs were created under the unprecedented conditions of corona—and as a result, were inspired by the consciousness of traveling through imaginary foreign lands and nature. As if adventuring through the universe inside of her own mind, Moriwaki’s versatility is best experienced through her fearless fusion of hip-hop, pop and experimental music. Through a lens of psychedelic production by Hideki Urawa, this album is a truly special, one-of-a-kind space experience for listeners to enjoy and embark upon. - Light In The Attic

Label:

Guruguru Brain – GGB-029LP

Format:

Vinyl, LP, Album

Country:

Japan

Released:

2 Sept 2022

Genre:

Electronic

Style:

Experimental

Hailing from the seaside communities surrounding Enoshima, a small island located 50 km southwest of Tokyo, Maya Ongaku is a ragtag collective of local musicians whose brand of earthy psychedelia transcends widely beyond the roots of their inner souls. We are a band without a drummer, and we’ve been using synths and drum machines—jamming along with machines so to speak—to freely rearrange the songs from our debut album. That experience is what motivated us to make this EP. We are reaching a point where our lives are at the mercy of electronics. With the development of new technologies like AI, it’s becoming harder to distinguish between what is real and what is computer-generated. These circumstances can be likened to the appearance of a phantom. Sonoda’s malleable guitar and vocals, Takano’s sinuous bass lines, Ikeda’s floating woodwinds, and a sprinkling of delicate percussion—all coalesce into an aural experience that’s assertive yet abstract, calm but unsettling. The slow building, sax-laden “Approach” serves as an introduction to maya ongaku’s world, while the appropriately-named “Water Dream” floats its way toward the gentle finale of “Pillow Song.” It’s a concise distillation of their many interests and influences, from Neo-Dada and Fluxus, to where contemporary art intersects with the development of modern recording technology in the ‘60s and ‘70s. As the title suggests, Approach to Anima is not intended to be a terminus; it’s merely the beginning of an exploration. The three childhood friends that comprise Maya Ongaku are always looking beyond the confines of the idyllic but rapidly gentrifying enclave of their beloved Enoshima. Feeding off of the energy that still radiates from the triumphant, decade-long journey of their label bosses’ band Kikagaku Moyo, who rose to global prominence from scrappy beginnings busking on the streets of Takadanobaba, they hope to go wherever inspiration takes them, to anywhere around the globe where their music can find a home. — via Label

↓
Label: Guruguru Brain
Format: Vinyl, LP, Repress
Released: 2023
Genre: Electronic, Folk
Style: Ambient, Folk

File under: Japanese Electronic
⦿

Khana Bierbood (translated as Strange Brew in Thai), was formed in 2012 at Bangsaen Beach. Spending their university years playing and jamming together, they discovered a shared passion for music. Influenced by ‘60s and ‘70s western psychedelic music, as well as Thai contemporary music like Thai Funk, Luk Thoung and Molam, they began crafting their own unique sound. Their songs often weave together stories and experiences that have been refined and arranged into simply lyrics but hidden with wit. This is their second studio album after their following the release of their debut LP Strangers From The Far East in 2019, in 2023, Go (Kikagaku Mayo/Guruguru Brain) joined the band at TMM studios in Bangkok and together they recorded this, their second studio album, Monolam (meaning unique in sound and style).

While the album maintains the infectious rock’n’roll charm of their previous offering, it shows a departure toward an even more sublime and groovy psychedelic sound - a sound that pays homage to their passion for the past and their longing for a new cultural renaissance. Lyrically, the songs speak of the life experiences of the band, combined sometimes with stories from Thai movies and dramas, telling tales of love, loss and adventure. — via Label

↓
Label: Guruguru Brain
Format: Vinyl, LP, Album
Released: 2024
Genre: Rock, Folk
Style: Psychedelic Rock, Surf

File under: Global Sounds
⦿
