‘Melodi’ is the second album from captivating duo Kit Sebastian (aka Kit Martin and Merve Erdem). Those familiar with the band's cult classic 2019 debut record 'Mantra Moderne' will instantly recognise their unique sound that blurs boundaries of world music, jazz and psychedelia. Not to be content replicating the same album, sonically the feel of ‘Melodi’ is a maturation. It is more diverse and provides glimpses into many different worlds from the Italian Riviera to the mountains of the Caucasus, the beaches of Bahia to the city streets of Istanbul and Paris. This joyous merging of soundscapes evokes a borderless planet with music as an international language, belonging everywhere and nowhere.

‘Melodi’ is imbued with Kit Sebastian's love of vintage records and world cinema, but it is not a retro homage. It celebrates its influences but is very much a modern record, being simultaneously brand new and retro. This is a credit to the duo's craft as musicians and songwriters, presenting their influences as a circular interaction between the present and the past rather than a linear one. – Mr Bongo / On Bandcamp

Label:

Mr Bongo – MRBLP227

Format:

Vinyl, LP, Album

Country:

UK

Released:

1 Oct 2021

Genre:

Jazz, Rock, Funk / Soul

Style:

Psychedelic, Funk

This album grapples with and transgresses these binaries because we have/and continue to cross borders. It is akin to something Madlib might dream up whilst lost in Japan collaborating with Min'yō players at a recording session. The record features some amazing shakuhachi (bamboo flute) playing by Hozan Yamamoto, which gives the music a haunting, dreamlike atmosphere. You can almost visualise the long grass blowing in the wind, and hear the bamboo rustling in the distance on a long hot summer’s day. Takeshi Inomata, Tadao Sawai and Kazue Sawai anchor the session. Takeshi’s exceptionally funky-drum work will almost certainly get some producers dusting off and firing up their MPC's. Whilst Kazue and Tadao work their magic on the koto (a traditional string instrument).

Though certainly not an ambient record, 'Jazz-Rock' has the same meditative, other-worldly quality that invites you to sit back, listen and be transported somewhere else. It is music that historically never existed as a unified musical genre. We think it’s important to make this distinction and to have the listener understand that the majority of the music on this compilation does not come from the highly famous names of the musical spectrum of North Africa and the Middle East. Instead, the final body compiled for this record consists of some – at least for us – nichey pearls and often overlooked artists; resulting in a diverse range of styles from Egyptian organ funk, disco sounds from Morocco, an example of the lively reggae scene of Libya, political songs from Lebanon, soundtrack music from Algeria, a musical union between Kenya and Oman, and much more.

The photo we chose for this cover somehow could be seen as an allegory of the sounds we feature on the label. It depicts Algerian composer Ahmed Malek at an ice cream bar dur- ing his stay in Japan for the World Expo in Osaka, 1970. He later said that his visit to Japan and especially the manga culture left a distinctive mark on the way he created his own compositions. With this in mind, it feels as a suiting visual representation for the mu- sic on this compilation.

Accordingly, the compilation you are holding in your hands offers a much wider range of music than just funk influenced sounds. Sure, it brings back Fadoul, who we have already dedicated a full length album to. He was the mystical Moroccan singer who - influenced by the sounds of James Brown- created his own musical vision full of energy but also still very intimate. Another artist we have featured before is Ahmed Malek, the grand Algerian soundtrack composer, whose music is largely connected by a distinct feeling of melancholic beauty or Hamid Al Shaeri, the Egyptian hit producer whose track “Ayonha” was probably the most widely appre-ciated track off our first compilation. But we have also learned that this format of a compilation can serve as a medium to introduce artists to our audience, who we are planning to dedicate full length releases to in the near future, such as Ibrahim Hesnawi. Hesnawi is the father of reggae music in Libya - a genre still widely popular in Libya - and whose presence in the country is commonly connected to the rhyth- mic similarities of reggae with some form of Libyan folkloric music. Nahib Alhoush is another Libyan artist, whose musical output we will spotlight in the near future. In the 1970s, he was the co-founder of Free Music, one of the first Libyan bands introducing western influences into their music. After the band stopped performing together he started an at least equally successful solo career under his own name." — via Label

↓
Label: Habibi Funk Records
Format: 2 x Vinyl, LP, Compilation
Released: 2021
Genre: Jazz, Rock, Reggae, Funk / Soul, Pop, Folk, World
Style: Reggae, Funk, Disco, Soundtrack

File under: Global Sounds
⦿

Habibi Funk is happy to present a selection of works by Algerian-born, Amazigh artist Majid Soula. What you can hear is filtered through Ukiyo-e (which translates as “pictures of the floating world”), which illustrates everyday life, as well as through Japonism, the study of Japanese art, and more specifically its influence on European works. The result is a surface that creates an illusion by sound. The infusion of Min’yō with jazz rock, this hazy scene evokes the landscape of Monet’s ”The Water Lily Pond”, which depicts the painter’s Giverny garden, with a Japanese bridge, bamboo, ginkgo trees and the reflection of the sky in the pond. In this composition, the sound of the Western concert flute, which stretches back to the Renaissance and Baroque periods, evokes the sound of the bamboo-flute (”shakuchachi”), which reached its peak during the Edo period. The guzheng, also known as the Chinese zither, with a more than 2,500 year history, joins traditional Japanese folk melodies with modern pop percussion and 20th century electronic instruments such as the Moog synthesizer, Wurlitzer electric piano and electric bass.

-

This is the illusion that celebrates the fleeting nature of all things. A journey. A deep inhale and a slow exhale. It has a mix of jazz (both funky and progressive), East Asian and South Asian sounds. The idea of fusing these styles and reframing them with the aesthetic of wabi sabi is to reconnect with nature and concentrate on asymmetries and emphasize ornamentation to generate new ways of looking at the world, here and now. – Bandcamp

Label: Piano Piano – PP1002

Format: Vinyl, LP, Album, Repress

Country: Sweden

Released: 12 Jun 2020

Genre: Jazz, Funk / Soul, Folk, World, & Country

Style: Jazz-Rock

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0584/5434/3838/products/648271df1e5cd2955a237b967af23e014d00cee2.jpg?v=1646297485
omar-khorshid-giant-guitar
Omar Khorshid – Giant + Guitar

Wewantsounds is delighted to announce the reissue of Omar Khorshid's highly sought after instrumental album 'Giant + Guitar' originally released in 1974 in Lebanon and recorded at Polysound Studio by famed Lebanese engineer Nabil Moumtaz. Ahmed Malek is a prolific, award-winning Algerian film composer, arranger, producer, multi-instrumentalist, and bandleader. He was among the first in his country to experiment with the Moog and wedded its sounds and textures to jazz, funk, rock and of course, Arab folk traditions. Musique Original de Films contains remastered versions of songs from the musician’s seminal album of the same name, adds previously unreleased tracks, rare photos of the artist’s life, and even includes an interview. While the sounds on this 14-track set are easily distinguishable, the way they are assembled is both captivating and strange, emotional and deeply saturated with grooves subtle and overt. Check the opener "Omar Gatlato" (there is an alternate version as the album's bookend): Slippery B-3, a sultry cowbell, and brushed snare offer a samba rhythm before a haunting flute solo and synth break (resembling a harpsichord) take it to another dimension. Frenetic hand percussion introduces "Les Vancances de L'Inspecteur Tahar," as the driving horn section is drenched in brass, strummed ouds, guitars, and a pumping bassline.

This is where Arab street music meets Afrobeat. "La Silence des Cendres" is pure, grooving, minor-key soundtrack funk with layered breaks, swirling strings, and a punchy, tight, electric bass. "Bolero" is exactly that, with an interplay between various keyboards, a sweet, lonesome oboe, oud, and a hypnotic, slow 4/4 rhythm played on a trap kit, congas, and dumbeks. The tenor saxophone solo adds the blues to the mix. It's followed by the smoking "Un Toit et Une Familie," led by a bouncy bass riff as oud, balalaika, strings, winds, and drums come swooping in like the theme from a haunted spaghetti western. There isn't a spare moment on Musique Original de Films. By its close, the listener should, if anything, become a dedicated fan of Malek. At the time, Hamid had just left Libya to pursue his career in Egypt via a detour in London, where he recorded his first album.

Hamid’s distinct sound of the sound is quintessentially reliant on heavy synths and so it was particularly important to purchase these synths in a timely manner. “Whenever a new one [synthesizer] would come out, we would have to buy it immediately, otherwise someone else would get their hands on that sound.” London also played an important role for Hamid as a musical epicenter. He fondly reminisces about the many live shows he attended there, including some of the biggest international musicians like Freddie Mercury and Michael Jackson. After returning to Cairo where he also recorded his following albums, he connected with SLAM! for the release of his debut, laying the foundation of a collaboration that lasted for 5 albums.

Hany Sabet had started SLAM! records in the early 1980s and focused on cassette tape releases, the format that expedited the success of a new generation of record labels in Egypt. By the mid 1980’s, SLAM! had become one of the most successful and economically dominant record labels in Egypt, with Hamid El Shaeri being just one of their key artists, alongside Mohamed Mounir, Hanan, Hakim, Mustafa Amar and many more. Luckily, Hany Sabet turned out to be a friend of Habibi Funk Record's team member's father, which probably helped to warm him to the idea of licensing “Ayonha” to this - in the scale of his world - tiny label from Germany. Eventually “Ayonha” ended up becoming a widely successful release and Habibi Funk Records brought up the idea of a full album dedicated to Hamid El Shaeri’s work on SLAM!. This release is dedicated to Hany Sabet, the founder of SLAM! and his wife Rosemary Jane Sabet (who took the photos we used for the cover and the booklet), who sadly passed away during the time it took Habibi Funk to prepare the release. — (via Label)

↓
Label: Habibi Funk
Format: Vinyl, LP, Compilation
Released: 2022
Genre: Electronic, Funk / Soul, Pop, World
Style: Synth-pop, Soul

File under: TAV Essential Listening
File under: Global Sounds
⦿

Completely unknown album by Salah Ragab's Cairo Jazz Band vocalist Maha, recorded in Cairo in 1979. It bothers, excites, seduces, but leaves no one indifferent! Delving into the deepest recesses of raï, this compilation serves as a tribute to its roaring years, but also as a rejuvenation of the genre in its sulphurous, subterranean version. It seemed like a good idea to dig into nearly untraceable cassettes, thus confirming it's in the oldest of Oranese pots that the very best of raï is to be found. Just 50 years ago, no one would have believed even a bit in a genre seemingly bound to forever turn round and round in its native Oran, laying low in one of its many coastal road clubs. In these underground venues, singers - backed up by a minimalist orchestration for lack of space - would move their audience to laughs and tears, sobbing in a beer or chuckling down (dry) whisky. Either way, the public would unfailingly be moved by their defying tunes, sounding like a challenge to the established, self-righteous order of things - complete with trumpets, electric guitars, accordions and an array of percussions. Through the pre and post-independence years, from 1950 to 1970, raï urbanised itself, with a generation growing up between asphalt and concrete to the sound of traditional flute, but also and mostly listening to twist, French variété and rock music. Their names were Boutaïba S'ghir, Messaoud Bellemou, Groupe El Azhar, Younès Benfissa or Zergui, and they passed on their collection of songs to the incoming "Chebs" -breathing a second youth into them. Oran, the capital of West-Algeria, will be at the heart of this rejuvenation. Raï's success was overwhelming, so much so that in 1985 - when it appeared at the Youth Festival in Alger and when Oran held its first raï festival - the Algerian authorities hastened to nationalise the genre, all the while calling for its "normalisation" (that is, the "purification" of its lyrics), and to declare it "an integral part of the national heritage". About a year later, raï is introduced to France via two festivals, one in Bobigny and the other at La Villette. They brought together all of the big names of raï, old and new, and drew in a public mostly made out of nostalgic blédards (a French expression designating a person originating from the Maghreb), plus a handful of curious onlookers. In France, raï doesn't stir much enthusiasm - if not in the media, or of a sociological kind. While in the Maghreb cassettes dealers are regularly ransacked, only a few French labels dare investing themselves in the recognition of a music bringing a new fresh wind, seducing and conquering other Algerian as well as Moroccan cities and regions. Later on, the Oranese style gains international appreciation and evolves technically - though more technique also means less feeling. Luckily though, the historical channel raï to be heard in the dives and discos survives its shinier cousin - sex, alcool and raï'n roll style. The label Naya Beat, which already released the powerful compilation Naya Beat Vol.1 last year, is right at the forefront here. Represented by the label: Pinky Ann Rihal with the vocally as well as melodically catchy "The Indian Dance", second track on Tere Liye, the latest Naya Beat catalogue number. This was originally released in 1985 and combines new wave borrowings with traditional South Asian music patterns and singing in Hindi. As is often the case here: Understanding the lyrics is somewhat of a challenge, so the full focus is placed on the sound arrangement. And Tere Liye is quite something in this regard.

Apart from the aforementioned smash hit, it’s songs, like the carefree "Jabse Dekha Hai" mix eighties zeitgeist at a brisk pace with an undeniable merriment that comes automatically. This is mainly due to the somewhat boomy, almost swaying beats, which make both the aforementioned piece as well as "Jagee Raat" really interesting. The highlight of the multi-faceted album is clearly "Party Tonight", which employs a dreamlike call-and-response of synths and vocals in the verses, and in the chorus extends the invitation to the late-night party with the most mystical intonation imaginable. And not surprisingly: Whether in South Asia or England, the Eighties were everywhere. — via HHV Magazine

↓
Label: Naya Beat Records
Format: Vinyl, LP, Reissue, Remastered, Stereo
Reissued: 2022 / Original Release: 1985
Genre: Electronic, Pop
Style: Disco, Synth-pop, New Wave

File under: Global Sounds
⦿

Munir aka Midnight Runners on his 4th Giant Wax Piece with Star Creature, hits us again with some diggin deep dug ups from his corner of the world. Between 1961 and 1964, Kelana Ria recorded 48 songs that were spread over four records, Kafilah, Yam El Shamah, YaMahmud and Ya Hamidah, which became the primary sources for this compilation. In the early 1960s, two of the best talents in the Indonesian music scene, songwriter and band leader Adi Karso, known for his hits "Papaya Cha-Cha-Cha" and "Balonku" and Gambus musician Munif Bahasuan teamed up to form Orkes Melayu (Malay Orchestra) Kelana Ria. These four recordings changed the trajectory of Indonesian popular music. Play "Renungkanlah" (Think About It), included in this compilation, a love song with heavenly melodies and lilting harmonies, to an audience in the Western part of Malaysia or people of Malay ethnicity in Singapore and they would immediately hum along to the tune. "Renungkanlah" has been covered by many countless other musicians in Indonesia and Malaysia and it has become a hit many times over. The song has become a go-to song in karaoke bars in the region, with fans oblivious to who actually wrote this song or who performed it the first time.

Or take the song "Ratapan Anak Tiri" (Lament of a Stepchild), a song that has traversed national boundaries and has become a universal sad song in the Malay world, turning into a shorthand for melancholia that permeates this archipelago of nations. Another stunner is the melancholia-laden "Kesunyian Jiwa" (Silence of the Soul), an operatic tune so majestic that it could open any black and white Kurosawa film from the late 1940s. "Kesunyian Jiwa" opens with marching percussion and what could pass for a horn section foregrounding an opera finale before settling into a Latin-inspired composition backing one of the most soulful vocal performances from the 1960s.

The songs and the soulful vocal performance belong to Muhamad Mashabi, who despite the popularity of the songs he created is now largely forgotten, whose history was kept alive only in the neighborhood where he grew up in Central Jakarta. With only a short musical career and only nine recorded songs from almost 40 compositions, Mashabi fell by the wayside in the early 1970s, especially with the rise of pop and rock from bands like Koes Plus, Panbers and God Bless. Yet his songs, inspired by Malay traditional songs but performed in the modern studio setting, lay the foundations for what would become the biggest musical genre in the country, dangdut, especially the kind that was popularized by the self-styled king of the genre, Rhoma Irama. Mashabi's distinctive vocal style and soul-searching lyrics helped give rise to dangdut, Indonesia's most popular music genre. — via Label

↓
Label: Elevation Records, Irama
Format: Vinyl, LP, Album
Released: 2023
Genre: Folk, Ethnic, Vocals

File under: Global Sounds
⦿

Since 2022, Wonderfruit has collaborated with ZudRangMa Records' Maft Sai, curating a line-up that reflects the broad creative culture of the region, from traditional acoustic Molam to cutting edge electronic interpretations of the genre. She works in various musical styles and idioms including jazz, minimalism, and neo-Sufi. It isn’t easy to say something new with “Autumn Leaves.” The 1945 torch song is surely one of the most performed standards in the jazz repertoire, not only by the likes of Miles Davis and Nat King Cole, but also by the beginners taking lessons in the back rooms of your local store music store: sitting down at a piano to play its wistful minor-key melody is a bit like the jazz version of picking up an electric guitar and going straight for “Smoke on the Water.” Putting your rendition on a new album in 2024 is either a conservative move or a bold one. For Arooj Aftab, the Brooklyn-via-Lahore singer and composer who moves freely between jazz, folk, and Hindustani and Western classical music, it is decidedly the latter.

Aftab’s “Autumn Leaves” comes early on Night Reign, her fourth solo album, and renders it as a ghostly incantation. Metallic percussion clatters in the background. Linda May Han Oh’s upright bass lines follow Aftab’s vocal like an elongated shadow follows the protagonist of a noir film. Without a chordal instrument to support it, the familiar tune becomes skeletal and spooky; Aftab’s chromatic embellishments make it spookier. Her take on “Autumn Leaves” is emblematic of the way she works: drawing from tradition while at the same time estranging it, stripping away clichés and stock devices to reveal the mysterious longing that gives the old poems and songs their lasting power. Aftab, who produces her albums herself, deserves as much credit for her composing and arranging as she does for her singing. Night Reign’s palette is similar to Vulture Prince, her 2021 breakout album, and features many of the same players along with a few new ones: harpist Maeve Gilchrist, whose instrument is second only to Aftab’s singing as the signature sound of her music; Aftab’s Love in Exile bandmates, jazz piano star Vijay Iyer and multi-instrumentalist Shahzad Ismaily; guitarists Kaki King and Gyan Riley; flautist Cautious Clay; percussionist Jamey Haddad; an unlikely Wurlitzer cameo from Elvis Costello.

Night Reign is less tethered to a single theme: Aftab originally conceived it as a collection of settings of Mah Laqa Bai Chanda’s work, then abandoned the idea when it began to feel constrictive. But if there’s one situation or emotion that persists across its songs—even “Autumn Leaves”—it is loving someone who isn’t there. It’s in the words, whether adapted from 18th-century poetry or an Instagram post, and in the mixture of tenderness and tough resolve that characterizes Aftab’s singing. It’s also in the music itself, in the vaporous way the instruments hover around some unspoken center, drawing as much attention to the negative space as the sound, and in the pulse that seems to keep going even when you can’t actually hear it. Deeply textural, expansive and full of potent performances, the album charts the heroic voyages of the jewel-hunters of yore, who sailed home through rough seas with precious cargo, and Ahmed’s own voyage of self-discovery over the past decade.

Ahmed began A Paradise in the Hold’s journey back in 2014, on a research trip in Bahrain, during her Jazzlines Fellowship. She’d trawl local bookshops looking for poems and lyrical inspiration. Many came from wedding songs, which were “a lot about beauty and connecting beauty with nature,” she says. Deepening her connection to the tradition, her grandfather even sang her some songs from his own wedding day. At the same time, she became fascinated by the celebratory music of women’s drumming circles and how they contrasted the work songs of the pearl divers. The latter dangerous pursuit has since ceased, though the divers’ sorrowful music – sung and clapped in a polyrhythmic style known as fijiri – lives on. She has reworked the suite’s main theme into album opener "She Stands On The Shore", which sets the tone for an inky odyssey through mermaids, goddesses, sirens and, on ‘Dancing Barefoot’, a runaway bride; and love, loss, new beginnings and a newfound freedom.

Notably, Ahmed hadn’t written for the voice until now. For A Paradise In The Hold, she penned lyrics in English, which she then translated to Arabic, or, on "Though My Eyes Go To Sleep My Heart Does Not Forget You", adapted the words from a pearl divers’ standard. She worked with a range of impressive singers to bring her vision to life: Brigitte Beraha, Natacha Atlas, Randolph Matthews and Alba Nacinovich. The voice of her father, meanwhile, can be heard on standout track "Into The Night", which lands you in the centre of a percussive hubbub and which Ahmed intended as a celebration of female independence. “He was trying to conduct the recording session in the family house,” she says of her dad. “Everyone was gathered in the sitting room and I recorded some of the ululations and clapping that you can hear in the track. I’m so glad I got to have my family on the album.” The collaborators on the album in particular, percussionist Corrina Silvester and the greatly missed giant of the jazz world and Yazz’s dear friend, drummer, Martin France, helped Ahmed to strengthen the connection between the two worlds; A Paradise In The Hold is a bold fusion that reveals its riches more with each rewarding listen. “It’s another step in my evolution of making music,” says Ahmed. “There’s so much beauty in Bahraini music. The man also known as BAP. and yosugi tells NME about his new band and their visceral debut album ‘Miasma Tahun Asu’.

“‘Miasma Tahun Asu’ was supposed to be a fun album.”

Kareem Soenharjo is telling NME the original plan. The Indonesian musician better known as BAP. is talking over Zoom on a hot Monday afternoon from a cramped café in South Jakarta, kretek cigarettes and ice coffee close at hand.

He’s talking about ‘Miasma Tahun Asu’, the debut album from his new four-piece band BAPAK.. A year in the making, it’s a marked departure from his previous work; gone is the low-fidelity hip-hop of his 2018 BAP. release ‘monkshood’. In its place: seven-minute fuzzed-out jams and resolutely experimental prog-psych rock.

It isn’t the sort of path that your average hip-hop producer takes, but Kareem isn’t your average hip-hop producer. In fact, ‘monkshood’ owed as much to progressive rock and jazz fusion as it did to L.A. beat scene stalwarts like Gaslamp Killer and rappers such as MF Doom. “My dad used to listen to a lot of King Crimson,” he says, an influence that runs through his work in both BAP. and BAPAK.

Kareem wanted to model ‘Miasma Tahun Asu’ after Boris’ ‘Akuma no Uta’ and ‘Heavy Rocks’, two albums that redefined “heavy” in the 2000s. Impressively, BAPAK. manage it, especially on lead single ‘Jon Devoight’, which would slot in perfectly on any of the Japanese veterans’ noughties records. But there’s also a palpable emotional heaviness to ‘Miasma’, so much so that even its lead architect finds it a challenge to revisit: “I can’t listen to it all at once, you know,” he admits.

It’s not hard to hear where he’s coming from. Lyrically, Kareem doesn’t pull any punches, charting the sort of tumultuous path through ironic self-aggrandisement, angst, mourning and cautious hope familiar to anyone who’s ever experienced a depressive episode.

‘Miasma’ takes a similarly frantic sonic trajectory, characterised by uneven, almost non-linear pacing. ‘Pity Me’, a downbeat abstract instrumental, slots in between ‘Jon Devoight’ and ‘Dogma Milenial Provinsi Yggdrasil’, the album’s two hardest-rocking songs. ‘Miasma’ almost resets after the latter, taking an acoustic detour on ‘Hijrah’ before a slow multi-song build-up to a cathartic and unexpectedly optimistic end. On first listen, the album feels haphazardly put together, like it’s getting pulled in different directions, arranged back to front. Kareem aware of this: listeners, he says, have criticised the album’s pacing, calling it “hard to swallow”.

But that disjointedness is the whole point. Like many of us, Kareem has found 2020 quite challenging. Reflecting on the past eight months, he tells NME that “it’d be accurate to say that my mental wellbeing has been a roller coaster”, adding that “I tried to portray my journey as accurately and as honestly as I could on the album”. The bumpy sequencing is intentional; as Kareem accurately observes, “there are no smooth roads”, especially not in 2020.

With this sort of conceptual concern for sequencing, it comes as no surprise that Kareem holds the concept of the album in high regard. “I want albums to present a chronological story,” he says. “I love making albums that you have to listen to as a whole, where you can’t just cherry-pick individual songs.” He names Frank Ocean’s ‘Blonde’ as a stellar example of the idealised album, singling out how it improves with repeated listens. And, like ‘Blonde’, ‘Miasma Tahun Asu’ was intended as a grower. The pacing makes sense in retrospect, and every little apparent fault or discomforting moment starts falling into place after the first listen. It’s an album that rewards a few spins, something worth celebrating in an age of instant gratification.

“You might not like it to begin with, but I want it to grow on you,” Kareem says of the album. “Because it’s personal, you know? It’s not something stupid I made over lunch; I’ve thought about it for a whole year.”

That “whole year” is how long the foursome of Kareem, Bagas, Kevin Silalahi and Alfath A. Nugraha spent bouncing ideas off of each other during weekly three-hour-long practice sessions, writing material for ‘Miasma Tahun Asu’. But for Kareem, this is an itch that he’s had for a decade, going back to high school. “All I listened to back then was off-the-wall music, because I was surrounded by it at home,” he recalls.

But, with like-minded bandmates few and far between, he turned to production instead. Kareem eventually discovered Ableton, a discovery that he credits with saving his life: “If I hadn’t found Ableton or some other way to make music by myself, you wouldn’t be talking to me right now.”

Kareem first started releasing music as yosugi, with ’Messages’ off his 2016 EP ‘Friends I Don’t Have Many Of Them’ becoming something of a hit in Jakarta. But, while he enjoyed the popularity, it also led to a small existential crisis. “Is this what you want to be remembered for?” he remembers asking himself. “This stupid trap song about getting messages from your local telemarketer?”

The answer was an emphatic “no”. He realised that he wanted to make something more substantial. In his own words, something that “came from the heart, blood, and soul”.

Enter BAP. 2017’s ‘belladonna’ was a promising start, a transitional work between the trap stylings of yosugi and the murkier realms he would explore later. He truly hit his stride with ‘monkshood’ the year after, crafting one of 2018’s most intriguing Southeast Asian hip-hop albums. He started playing live, eventually recruiting Bagas (who plays in the punk band taRRkam) to drum during ‘monkshood’ live sets.

The rapport Kareem established with Bagas motivated him to scratch the decade-long itch to start a band; Alfath (aka Flowr Pit) and Kevin (a beatmaker who goes by whoosah) were recruited soon after to play guitar and bass, respectively. Both are old friends of his, their friendships founded on sharing and discussing music. Kareem describes the formation of BAPAK. as “a positive cascade of events”.

While Kareem acknowledges that he’s the “leader of sorts”, the album was written as a group, their collective belief in the music shining through. ‘Miasma Tahun Asu’ sounds vital and urgent, even during its quietest moments, and that’s not something you get with a band of hired guns. It took them seven or eight jam sessions to write ‘Jon Devoight’, which opened the floodgates for the rest of the material.

BAPAK.’s roots may go back to BAP. and ‘monkshood’, but it’s impossible to deny that ‘Miasma Tahun Asu’ is a significant departure from that beloved 2018 album. When asked if he ever worried about losing fans, Kareem is unequivocal: “Music should be unapologetic, and it should be honest.” He quickly adds that he doesn’t care what genre he’s working in. “As long as it’s honest and it’s what I was feeling at the time, I don’t care if it doesn’t live up to other people’s expectations.” After a short pause, he reminds NME that “I’m trying to help me through my music.” One gets the feeling that anything else, including other people’s reactions to his music, is secondary.

Kareem reveals that he was somewhat “dependent” on making the album, hoping that it would “resolve the problems in [his] head.” But that’s not been the case, and a hint of sadness crosses his face when he looks back on its creation. “What kind of pain were you in when you were making this?” he admits asking himself. “Was it really worth it?” His mixed feelings are plain to see, his ambivalence disarmingly honest.

Regardless of his uncertainties, he’s still proud of ‘Miasma’, telling NME that he thinks it’s the best thing he’s released so far. Despite or because of that, he’s not in any rush to follow it up with new music. “I’ve done what I can musically,” he says, believing that it’s time to take a step back from ‘Miasma’ and let it develop a life of its own, outside of his control.

So, if he’s satisfied musically, what’s in the immediate future for Kareem Soenharjo, then? “Trying my best to have a decent day, every day,” he admits, somewhat contentedly. “I’m blood and bones, the same as you, the same as everyone else. I’m just trying to be ok with that.” — (via NME)

↓
Label: La Munai Records
Format: Vinyl, LP, Album
Country: Indonesia
Vinyl Release: 2023 / Album Release: 2020
Genre: Rock, Electronic, Hip Hop
Style: Experimental, Prog Rock, Punk, Ambient, Indie Rock

File under: Global Sounds
⦿

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0584/5434/3838/files/aa_7a5f5f15-75a5-41a8-8443-03cce1aa5047.png?v=1759591344
clarissa-connelly-world-of-work
Clarissa Connelly - World Of Work

The young Danish/Scottish singer/songwriter Clarissa Connelly presents World of Work - her stunning debut album for Warp. Produced by Mohinder’s eldest son and legendary bhangra pioneer Kuljit Bhamra using a recently acquired Roland SH-1000 synthesiser and a CR-8000 CompuRhythm drum machine played by his then 11-year-old brother, the album was recorded at Roxy Music bass player Rick Kenton’s studio in London. His 11-year-old brother, Ambi, would often sit in on the drum machine. In the evening, they’d play the demos for Mohinder, who’d pen Punjabi lyrics to sing over them, delivering songs of love and yearning in a melismatic, full-throated voice. Those sketches would crystallize into Punjabi Disco, the first-ever British Asian electronic dance album—a joyous, loose-limbed romp through Punjabi-tinged disco, funk, psychedelia, and proto-acid house.

The family kitchen is an odd birthplace for a pioneering dance music record, but in the context of the 1980s British Asian experience, it’s also a fitting one. Outside the home, the only places where music was regularly performed were gurdwaras and temples—where the songs were strictly devotional—or during community weddings. Those were the arenas where Mohinder—trained as a gyani, or Sikh devotional singer—honed her voice after moving to the UK in 1961. But the weddings they played were sedate affairs, men and women seated apart, movement limited to tapping feet. The Bhamras set out to change that—Kuljit and his brothers clearing tables to open space on the floor, Mohinder urging the women forward, sometimes refusing to sing unless they were allowed to dance too. This represented one of the first desegregated South Asian dance spaces in Britain, and on Punjabi Disco, the Bhamras created a new sound to fill it, drawing inspiration from the disco mania that followed 1979’s Saturday Night Fever.

Recorded over a few days at a local studio owned by Savage Process bassist Rik Kenton, Punjabi Disco was a family project through and through—Mohinder on vocals, Kuljit and Ambi handling the synthesizer and drum machine, Kuljit’s high school friend Trevor Michael Georges on bass, and brother Satpaul designing the neon-sign cover. “Everything just clicked,” Kuljit says. “We thought people would love it.” — (via Pitchfork)

↓
Label: Naya Beat Records
Format: 2 x Vinyl, LP, Album, Stereo
Reissued: 2025 / Original: 1982
Genre: Electronic, Funk / Soul, Folk, World
Style: Disco, Acid House, Bhangra, Nu-Disco, Boogie, House

File under: Global Sounds
⦿

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0584/5434/3838/files/ab67616d0000b273f8aca26511e8fbc37b8be336.jpg?v=1764434800
altin-gun-garip
Altın Gün – Garip

Since bursting onto the scene in 2018 with their debut album, On, Amsterdam-based Altın Gün have been at the vanguard of the 21st century revival of Turkish-influenced psychedelic grooves.

Coming straight out of the gate with a wah-wah and organ heavy sound that effortlessly captured the spirit of Anatolian 70s psych-funk masters like Bariş Manço and Erkin Koray, they deepened and expanded their palette with 2021’s Yol, which brought synths and drum machines into the mix for a more 80s-influenced dream-pop vibe.

But no matter how far out they’ve gone, they’ve always maintained a strong link to the same Anatolian folk traditions that inspired those early pioneers. When I was five, six years old, my grandfather always had cassettes by Neşet Ertaş and I used to listen to it all day long. Then I was too young to really understand the lyrics and the meaning, but I really liked the melodies.
