It was at a time in the early 1970s when there were only a handful of female songstresses who sang soulfully in Japan. In 1977, Miyamoto was scouted by Isao Suzuki to join his band, Soul Family and subsequently, with their backing, he produced Push, an album that kickstarted her career. Beloved by many in the Japanese jazz scene as “Oma-san”- Suzuki was renowned for developing young talent. Noriko was one of his prodigies, and so ‘Push’ became a vehicle to showcase her and his band as well, which featured notably future renowned players such as keyboardist, Masanori Sasaji, who went on to back Yasuaki Shimizu and guitarist, Kazumasa Akiyama, who played with many major Japanese Jazz musicians. According to Noriko, these young musicians in the group helped Suzuki create a brand new sound, mixing orthodox jazz with the crossover / fusion sound that was popular at the time, coming together supremely on ‘Push’.

For ‘Push’, Suzuki focused on Noriko’s unique prowess of singing songs in English, somewhat a rarity in the Japanese music scene at the time. She sang two jazz standards, ‘Everything I Have Is Yours’ and ‘Stella By Starlight’ on the album. Noriko also wrote English lyrics for two original compositions of Suzuki’s, an instrumental piece, ‘Cadillac Woman’, and ‘My Life’, a song that he composed for Kimiko Kasai, who’d originally sung it in Japanese on her 1977 album, ’Tokyo Special’.

Noriko fulfilled her long-held dream of becoming a soul singer after she moved to the US in 1990 and subsequently joined a number of prestigious outfits, such as Eddie Murphy’s band, Graham Central Station, the Brothers Johnson and Side Effect, but ‘Push’ is the album that paved the way for her career and hopefully, with this first time ever, worldwide reissue, it will attract more listeners. Recorded in New York, and originally released in 1976, 'Juice' presents Ryo at the height of his powers. Born in Japan in 1947, Ryo had a long and stellar career recording and releasing music up until his passing on 13 April 2020, in Tallinn, Estonia. Ryo is one of the pioneers of the jazz fusion genre, with the Japanese jazz fusion / funk sound becoming extremely influential within the 80s UK club scene and amongst its DJs. His track 'Trinkets & Things' became a bonafide underground classic. In the US he worked with some of the greats of jazz, such as Elvin Jones, Chico Hamilton and Bobbi Humphrey, to name but a few. A forward-thinking and ever-evolving musician, Ryo collaborated with the Roland Corporation and Korg on the 'guitar synthesizer' and later wrote music software for computers. Later in life he relocated to Estonia and worked there, as well as Finland, Sweden, and the Baltic states. 'Juice' has become a much-loved album for crate diggers and jazz-funk enthusiasts, with its tracks frequently being sampled and re-imagined in hip-hop. The smokey, beat-down, spiritual funk jam 'Bamboo Child' has been flipped by Diamond D, Puff Daddy, and Kool G Rap. The album was released in 1976 on RCA Records and features the musicians' drummer Jimmy Young, rhythm guitarist Hugh McCracken, and bassist Stu Woods amongst other luminaries. A solid album throughout that incorporates a heavy dose of tripped-out synths alongside the emerging disco sound of the time. Tracks such as the opener ‘Raisins’, with its drum beat intro and bubbling bass-line, rivals The Headhunters at their finest.- Mr Bongo | Bandcamp

<colgroup>
<col style="width: 49.9331%;">
<col style="width: 49.9331%;">
</colgroup>

Label:

Mr Bongo – MRBLP252

Format:

Vinyl, Album, Reissue, LP

Country:

UK

Released:

5th Aug 2022

Genre:

Jazz

Style:

Fusion, Jazz-Funk

Reissue, originally released in 1975. "Considered by many one of the most gifted and outstanding players in the Electone community thanks to his fresh, energetic, rhythmic and sometimes humorous style of playing, from 1975 to 1977 Shigeo Sekitō released a four-LP album set titled Special Sound Series for the iconic Nippon Columbia. On the first chapter of this series, Sekitō revisits, in his own colourful style, compositions such as 'You Are The Sunshine Of My Life' by Stevie Wonder, 'Oh, My Love' by John Lennon and Yoko Ono, 'Andalucia' by Ernesto Lecuona, alongside some of his own composition such as 'My Sweet Girl' and the title track 'Catch In Alice', creating a blend of easy-listening jazz with funk and soul influences. He approaches the craft of pop music with utmost seriousness; recently, he even destroyed all his demos, ensuring that no one would release any of his half-baked ideas posthumously. It’s hard to complain, though, when he’s still releasing songs like “Cheer Up! The Summer,” suffused in the breezy atmospheres and unbridled joy of his best work. “We can fly away,” he sings, as string arrangements and vocal harmonies lift higher. It is not known if the cover of this album contributed to its lack of success when it was released, but it is almost impossible today to find an original pressing of this record.

Label:

Union Records (3) – TEA-17

Series:

Project Re:Vinyl, Deep Jazz Reality

Format:

Vinyl, LP, Album, Reissue, Clear

Country:

Japan

Released:

10 Aug 2022

Genre:

Jazz

Style:

Modal

The Fulukotofumi is the most important and ancient historical chronicle of Japan. The content of this work becomes an inspiration for the creation of a sound transposition of the legends and myths that most marked the spirit and inspiration of Hiromasa Suzuki, as a musician and as a high-level composer.The music that is concentrated between these grooves is a representation of the best that moved in the early seventies in the jazz-rock orbit at an international level; in addition, very strong infiltrations of tradition, characterized above all by the extremely calibrated and perfectly ad hoc interventions of the Biwa (lute of the Japanese tradition once used by blind monks to recite poems) and the Wadaiko drum.From its entirety, a highly evocative and magical sketch in nine suites emerges, a viaticum towards the most ancestral past of Japan, but at the same time also immersed in the modernity and expressive relevance of the land of the rising sun.A masterpiece that, buried for too long in the archives, is finally back reissued on vinyl with original graphics on its gatefold cover and enriched by an insert with the translations of the precious introductory essay contained in its original edition.Accompanying Suzuki's acoustic and electric piano is the crème of Japanese jazz that gives free rein to one's primordial instincts. Some passages come close to progressive, especially thanks to Kiyoshi Sugimoto's Allan Holdsworth style guitar. - Cinedelic

<colgroup>
<col style="width: 50.0644%;">
<col style="width: 50.0644%;">
</colgroup>

Label:

Cinedelic Records – CNPL810, On Records Japan – CNPL810

Series:

Orient Series

Format:

Vinyl, LP, Reissue

Country:

Italy

Released:

25 Nov 2022

Genre:

Jazz, Rock

Style:

Jazz, Rock

The music Coltrane, Tyner and others did back in their prime made a sizable ripple in jazz. His mother taught music and played the shamisen – a traditional Japanese stringed instrument – while his father ran, among other things, an electronics shop. Their respective professions were to be decisive in the path that Terauchi would later take. Serendipitously, at the age of five, Takeshi was given his first instrument – a guitar. His destiny sealed, he quickly began experimenting with different tools from his father's shop to give his instrument a stronger sound. The technological approach came from his father, the technique from his mother. Terauchi’s signature playing style owes a lot to his mother’s instrument of choice, as he attacks the notes on his guitar as one plucks the strings of a shamisen.

This exceptional compilation you are holding in your hands explores some of the best works by Takeshi Terauchi, recorded between 1966 and 1974, where the guitar hero looks inwards to Japan for inspiration. A meeting between traditional folk songs and the unique way Terauchi and his band play: the content is explosive, inspired, and highly addictive! The 60s and 70s were undoubtedly Terauchi’s finest hours, and in the late 60s, one Japanese critic said that Terauchi was not only the best guitarist in Japan, but also in the world. You can now find out why. - Bandcamp

<colgroup>
<col style="width: 50%;">
<col style="width: 50%;">
</colgroup>

Label:

180g - 180GKINGLP01

Format:

Vinyl, LP, Album, Compilation, Gatefold

Country:

UK

Released:

10th March 2023

Genre:

Jazz, Rock

Style:

Jazz-Rock, Surf

BBE Music continues its highly acclaimed J Jazz Masterclass Series with Kemo Sabe, the debut album from pianist Masao Nakajima. It’s an important historical marker not only for Japanese jazz but also for recording in general, since it was the first work recorded on PCM digital audio. Joining in on this monumental session were Inagaki and his jazz rock unit, Soul Media – with a lineup including Masahiko Sato (p, elec. p), Ryo Kawasaki (g), Yasuo Arakawa (b), Hajime Ishimatsu (ds), and Seiji Tanaka (ds). ‘Fairy Rings’, an original track by Sato, boasts a tight interpretation that makes it a highlight of the album. When he returned to Japan he went straight into the studio and cut this Blue Note inspired Japanese Jazz Masterpiece. With a selection of tunes ranging from the 1940's stylings of "Tico Tico" through to the samba infused "Orfeo Negro" and arriving in Silversville with "Sayonara Blues" Hideo Shiraki has hit all the sweet spots. With sleeve notes translated into English for the first time and laid out in the Blue Note Style this release is going to be seen as a landmark re-issue. A special vinyl-only release on Jazz Room Records. - Label

"Bossa jazz from 60s Japan – a set recorded right around the same time that Verve first started hitting bossa grooves in the US. The sound here is sharper than a Verve bossa album, though – with some of the same hardbop inflections you'd hear on other Hideo Shiraki albums from the time – thanks to flute and tenor from Sleepy Matsumoto, and trumpet from Hisaya Omata. The tenor and trumpet come together with almost a Blue Note-styled sort of sound – but the bossa vibe is still nicely maintained in some of the looser percussion touches in the rhythms – a great blend that makes the album a real standout in the Japanese jazz scene of the 60." - Jazz Messengers

Label:

Jazz Room Records – JAZZR-025

Format:

Vinyl, LP, Album, Reissue

Country:

UK

Reissued:

2023 (Original: 1962)

Genre:

Jazz, Japanese Jazz

Style:

Hard Bop, Latin Jazz, Bossa Nova

Mischievous, unrestrained, and daring, the Montreal psych-rock collective’s second album boldly redefines a sound they’d already redefined.

It may not be easy to get accustomed to eleki music, a strain of surf rock most closely associated with Japanese guitar master Takeshi Terauchi. While eleki songs usually feature a simple guitar line that’s catchy as a wave, the accompanying pentatonic scales and rhythm guitar in double time add layers of complexity to the material. Hey, just because good music can be simple doesn’t mean it has to be.

Terauchi’s heir apparent, TEKE::TEKE of Montreal, started as a band that exclusively played covers of the legend’s tunes, but molted into songwriters of their own after bringing vocalist Maya Kuroki into the fold. The group’s debut album, 2021’s Shirushi, gained the group a spot on the long list of nominees for Canada’s prestigious Polaris Music Prize. That album’s follow-up, Hagata, so boldly redefines a sound they already redefined that Polaris might as well give TEKE::TEKE the 2023 award right now.

Shirushi was an eclectic, fun record that carved out its own cubby hole in the record store by melding eleki with psych-rock, as well as some occasional shoegaze. But at least compared to Hagata, it was reticent. Principally, Kuroki often took a back seat on Shirushi—and when she did chime in, it was often with singing or whispering. On Hagata, Kuroki belts out high-octave notes and screams in her native Japanese—which is representative of the entire seven-member group breaking free. They collectively act like a kid in a music store, reaching for wind instruments, horns—anything that can make a sound, really.

Muted as it was at times, Shirushi knew how to have fun. But there’s a difference between having fun while under a chaperone’s watch and having fun when they’re looking the other way. Hagata is mischievous, unrestrained, and daring. In other words, even more fun. At various turns, the record dips into Japanese folk (with fee-fi-fo-fum chants and Kuroki singing vibrato, as heard on opener “Garakuta”), chillwave-ish electronic minimalism (“Onaji Heya”), and soundtrack music to fictional California beach sitcoms and Connery-era Bond movies (“Setagaya Koya” and “Yurei Zanmai”).

TEKE::TEKE proved during a few shows they played in the US earlier this year that their music is best experienced live, with psychedelic soap-bubble visual effects draping the performers. Still, in concert there’s foreshadowing whenever a musician reaches for an instrument. On record, it’s a mystery what sound they’ll create next, and which member will be responsible for it. In a multiverse-obsessed culture in which ludicrous left-field mash-ups are not just encouraged but almost required, there might be no album that captures the power of crossover music, no album better-suited for the times we’re in, than Hagata. — (via Flood Magazine)

—

From the tender-hearted “Jinzou Maria” to the rumbling and raucous “Yurei Zanmai”, the songs of Hagata bear an eerie yet somehow familiar sensation. Japanese pop tones, Serge Gainsbourg grandeur, folk whisper, and Brazilian surf rock all mix into the psychedelic stew. Blending past and present, from Canada to Japan, multiple lives lived at once, each track carries a sense of change, impact, of having been marked in an intimate way. And yet the force behind that marking is always just out of grasp, a wisp, a ghost, an energy, a spirit that compels you to keep reaching. And at the end of the day, the concrete answer of how that bite happened is far less thrilling than the bite itself. Around the end of March, just as my body was feeling a little lighter, I found myself reaching for the synthesizer. I had no intention of composing something; I just wanted to be showered in sound. I had a feeling that it’d have a small healing effect on my damaged body and soul. Up until then, I barely had the energy to listen to music, let alone play anything. But after that day, I began to occasionally touch the keys of the synthesizer and piano, and I began to record little sketches of sounds as if to write a diary. I tried choosing 12 of my favorite sketches for this album. There are no adornments—I’m intentionally putting them out as is. From now on, until my body gives out, I’ll probably continue to keep this kind of ‘diary.’” - Label

A collection of ambient etudes for piano and synthesizer, the album is strikingly minimal in its arrangements. Others, like “20220202” and “20220214,” are similarly atmospheric, made up of raw, unvarnished sounds; they feel more like demos than the focused interventions of Sakamoto’s past solo records. - Pitchfork

Label:

Masterworks

Format:

2 x Vinyl, LP, Album

Released:

2023

Genre:

Electronic, Classical

Style:

Ambient, Modern Classical

Universounds, HMV Record Shop and 180g team up for an exceptional release in their highly acclaimed WaJazz series, to be out on Jiro Inagaki's 90th birthday, October 3rd, 2023, celebrating the life and music of one of the most iconic Japanese jazz musicians of the last 60+ years. He also worked as a film director, actor, racing driver, writer, and commentator, and became popular as a versatile cultural figure. Since the latter half of the 1960s, when jazz has diversified, many works have been created that attempt to return to Japan with their cutting-edge musicality, but among them, “Kokezaru Suite” is a pioneer. From Japanese musical instruments to electric musical instruments, based on the fusion of jazz and ancient Japanese music, contemporary rock-psychedelic elements are injected into it. It’s a merciless and intense sound. It is an ambitious and eternal problem work of Miho, who has made everyone say that he is a talented person. A wonderful piece of work. - adapted from Universounds (Yusuke Ogawa)

Label:

Columbia, HMV

Series:

Takt Jazz Series, Project Re:Vinyl (HMV)

Format:

Vinyl, LP, Album, Limited Edition, Reissue, Remastered, Gatefold

Country:

Japan

Reissued:

2022 (Original: 1969)

Genre:

Jazz, Japanese Jazz

Style:

Contemporary Jazz, Free Improvisation

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0584/5434/3838/files/1-hiroshi-suzuki-masahiko-togashi-variationcopy.jpg?v=1719909598
akira-miyazawa-bull-trout
Akira Miyazawa – Bull Trout

An exuberant album by Akira Miyazawa, the tenor saxophonist who made substantial contributions to the development of Japan's jazz scene. The book unveiled a myriad of beautiful and rare records from a highly prolific, but still then unknown, Japanese groove scene. He has also selected a large part of the music in our highly acclaimed Wamono compilations.

For this brand new chapter in the series, Yoshizawa explores King Records' legendary catalog and unearths exceptional, rare and unknown musical gems. King Records has been releasing music since 1931 and is one of the most prestigious labels in Japan. Traditional Japanese music, known as "Minyo", are ancient songs once sung by fishermen, coal miners and sumo wrestlers. They are reimagined here with vibrant afro latin, rock, rare groove and funky arrangements in this killer selection of music released on King between 1963 and 1979. Also worth mentioning is the track Ohara Bushi by The Peanuts, which was released only on tape in 1970 and is now available for the first time ever on vinyl format.

Put the needle on the record, turn up the volume and dig right now into the Wamono sound - the cream of the Japanese funk, soul, rare groove and disco music developed throughout the years since the end of the fifties in Japan! — (via Label)

Vinyl tracklist:
A1 Chiemi Eri – Aizu Bandaisan
A2 Pinky & Killers – Soran Bushi
A3 Tokyo Children's Choir – Kokiriko
A4 Michiya Mihashi & The Tokyo Cuban Boys – Sado Okesa
A5 Dark Ducks – Konpira Funefune
A6 Ebonee Webb – Cowboy's Elegy
A7 Akira Ishikawa & Count Buffalo – Tanchame
B1 Satoru Oda & His Group – Yagi Bushi
B2 Pinky & Killers – Otemoyan
B3 Miki Nakasone – Kunjan Sabakui
B4 Leon Pops – Mamurogawa Ondo
B5 The Peanuts – Ohara Bushi
B6 Tokyo Academy Mixed Choir – Kiyari Kuzushi
B7 King Orchestra – Dojou Sukui (Yasugi Bushi)

↓
Label: 180g
Format: Vinyl, LP, Compilation
Released: 2025
Genre: Jazz, Rock, Latin, Funk / Soul, Folk, World
Style: Japanese, Min'yō, Funk, Soul-Jazz, Afro-Cuban Jazz, Latin Jazz, Psychedelic Rock

File under: Japanese // Japanese Folk/Rock
⦿

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0584/5434/3838/files/a_2e49c3f6-cf35-4612-9b7a-62b2e11f61f1.jpg?v=1764398556
