As a pianist, Bobby Timmons had already left a lasting mark on hard bop before recording This Here Is Bobby Timmons in 1960. As a member of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers and Cannonball Adderley’s Quintet, he helped shape some of the era’s defining recordings while contributing compositions that would become jazz standards in their own right.
His debut as a bandleader gave him the chance to step out from behind those legendary groups and reveal the full scope of his talent. Rooted in the gospel music he grew up with in his father’s Philadelphia church, Timmons blended blues, soul, and swinging hard bop into his own unique style.
More than sixty years later, This Here Is Bobby Timmons is joining Craft Recording’s Original Jazz Classics series on 180-gram vinyl cut from the original tapes by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio.
Overall, This Here Is Bobby Timmons is an excellent debut by a stellar pianist. While Timmons would only live to 38 after contracting cirrhosis from drug and alcohol addiction, his legacy as composer and pianist lives on. Soul jazz players like Grant Green, Junior Mance, and Jack McDuff all were inspired by Timmons’ style.
For anyone exploring hard bop and soul jazz beyond its biggest names, this debut remains an essential listen as it captures Bobby Timmons at the peak of his creativity. — (via Glide Magazine)

Pianist Bobby Timmons by early 1960 had already had successful stints with Art Blakey (where he contributed "Moanin'") and Canonball Adderley (writing "This Here" and "Date Dere"). For his first recording as a leader, Timmons (whose "funky" style was beginning to become very influential) performs those three hits along with his own "Joy Ride" and five standards in a trio with bassist Sam Jones and drummer Jimmy Cobb. Always more than just a soul-jazz pianist, Timmons (who effectively takes "Lush Life" unaccompanied) became a bit stereotyped later in his career but at this early stage was at the peak of his creativity. Essential music. — (via AllMusic)

This Here is Bobby Timmons is a document from one of the major jazz movements of the fifties and sixties, and should be appreciated in that spirit. This release provides the most transparent glimpse yet into Timmons’ soulful playing and his studio sessions. Also recommended for a fuller vision of Timmons as a performer are his key sessions with Cannonball and with the Jazz Messengers. As a sideman, he was hard to beat; as a composer, he added new sounds and rhythms to the rich griot of jazz; as a leader, his tragically short career denied him the time to grow and mature. — (via Jarrett House North)
