umberto-fiorentino-claudio-quartarone-ii
Umberto Fiorentino, Claudio Quartarone – II

The first album 'Anamorfosi' was recorded in one long, full-day studio session in November 2019, to which an additional track was added, namely the opening track of the album that was later released in 2022. The two artists met again in February 2022, giving themselves a margin of five days to record new tracks; stretching time and following the creative vein; playing from morning to night; according to inspiration and stopping when necessary. "Before we started, we considered what we would like to play," the two guitarists recount. "With the goals set, the rest came by itself. It only took three days." Another year, then, to arrange the pieces and listen to the recordings, and then the phone call to Birdbox Records patron Lorenzo Vella: "Would you like to do the follow-up to Anamorfosi?"

II is a more 'rational' album. "That's what happens," laughs Quartarone, "when you lock Fiorentino and Quartarone in a room to create music!" Fiorentino and Quartarone are two visionary composer-improvisers who converse effortlessly, the former on semi-acoustic guitar and the latter on classical guitar. Both fans of electronic music, Fiorentino and Quartarone also wanted to include, in a couple of tracks, loops made by recording percussive sounds on the guitar itself. All in all, the listening sensation is that of a single, great guitar.

II comprises eight tracks, which have, as a common thread, a matrix in the repeated use of the blues form with a broad development. — (via Label)

—

II makes the same demands on the listener as the debut album "Anamorphosi". In the piece "Chi low Key", characterized by a recurring melody loop in the background, Umberto Fiorentino and Claudio Quartarone let the notes run beautifully on their guitars. "Two side of the Coin" is melodically playful and once again exerts the same pull on me that I learned to appreciate from the previous album. In "Sacred Geometry", the two guitar pros intertwine and interlock very skillfully. The complex structures, the high demands on the art of merging distinctive jazz approaches and the ideas developed in this context increase. In "Hybris Treasure", the more flowing musical structures relax again. What initially seems more banal compared to the previous piece unfolds its magnificence in the thoughtfully played moments. The stylistic mix of masterfully interwoven speed and rhythm changes, how they come together in "Morning Glory", how sound patterns are interwoven, is magnificent. It continues in the same way on "Eastwood Bung". The track "Time no Time" brings me back to the real world.

I don't think you can record guitars any better. This work is proof that high art, when it meets quality and experience, marks the pinnacle of what is expected of a master tape. The discussion as to whether analog or digital equipment was used for the recording is irrelevant at this point. — (via Audio Tape Review)

—

- 180g Audiophile pressing on BioVinyl
- Limited to 300 Numbered Copies

ATTENTION!
